A non DSM question

Long story short my brothers truck (02 I think, Cadillac Escalade).

I've been searching the net a bit to see if I could find something concrete enough to suggest to him. Figured I'd ask here in case one of you knows what could cause it.

It wont start, it turns over and you can smell raw fuel after he turns it over for a few seconds (strong from the exhaust) then when he releases the key, it will act like maybe one or two cylinders are trying to fire for a few seconds then stops, sometimes it will act like its going to fire when he first turns the key, and then just turns over. And then does the chugging when he stops trying.

I've never actually ran into this one before, never seen a vehicle do that after trying to start. So any idea what would cause this?

Gonna ask a dumb one here: Did he pull plugs and maybe cross some plug wires or something?

Firing order, if it's a 350, or 5.7L (actually, any V8 from GM) would be; 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.

Also, wonder if the cam chain took a slip causing cam timing to be off...

That wouldn't explain the weak spark. I would pull the distributor cap and check out the contacts inside the cap and on the rotor. I've seen a few of these vortec engines with the tab that makes contact on the cap worn off. I would also test the coil wire with a multimeter to verify that it is in good condition.

Check the fuel pressure. Vortec engines must have specfic fuel pressure, 5psi too can cause that sometimes. Also 2002 escalades only came with 5.3 or 6.0 not 5.7. I don't think any escalade came with 5.7. Fuel pressure for 2002 escalade with 5.3 vortec is 55-62. If its lower then you need to change your fuel pump.

Check for fuel pressure! I can almost guarantee that the pump is going out from watching that video. Also check base timing just to be sure so you can rule it out. But I'm gonna say its a fuel pressure issue. Might also be the distributor.

I should have known that. I've only seen a ton of them. My bad just all data didn't list it for it.
