Ok guys and gals. I have a 1990 AWD TSI i got in a trade for a POS dirtbike that didn't run. So my tsi needs a complete engine rebuild. Before i started on the engine I have already started on the basics as of new breaks, new studs an lugs, getting ready to change out blown strauts, an so on. I started with the parts that are also important to keep the car safe to drive :) So I've been searching for about a month now an getting my parts list filled but starting to run short on money. So the part i can't seem to figure out is what to get for a rebuild kit or piece one togather. The only things i found info on is bad reviews on some ebay kits and so on or to use 2g pistons with 1g rods..

All I'm trying to do is get my tsi back to stock or close to stock so i can drive my dream car agian.

I use to own one when i was 16 an it was a fwd turbo tsi. I have never had a awd and being dieing to get this one going.

So any help on what i should to for the engine rebuild would be great.

Thanks everyone

First thing is to get it out and apart, tear the engine down and see what you need.

You should have a 6 bolt engine.

Next set a goal and budget for the engine build.

But do not try for a 600hp build with a $1500 budget.

What do you want the car for? DD? AutoX? Drag?

Your HP goal, budget and end use will help with the parts selection you will need.

Also remember you will need supoerting mods for the engine build, you will not have a long lasting 600hp engine if you run a stock ECU and fuel system.

Just wanna make it a DD an honestly I'd be happy with stock.. I haven't drove a boosted car in years an I miss the feeling. I have the engine out of the car right now on a stand in my shed for now since I don't have a garage :( So that being said I'm gonna tear it down all the way an i really would't mind goin back to stock so its a reliable DD

Yes stock and reliable is great, however we all know that the boost bug will get you sooner or later, (or already has, as you said you miss the feeling) and you will want more. just keep that in mind when buyin parts.

Do not waste your time with the 1g 2g piston rod combo as the wrist pins are different sizes and require machining. I would look for some evo internals if you want a stronger but budget lower end. You might be able to pick them up for a steal on evolutionm.net.

That's how most of us started out, yours truly included. Before i knew it I found myself with a turbo out of a half-ton pickup truck and running e85 (how did that happen?). Boost is a drug...an expensive one. You will want more...not a matter of if, rather a matter of when :).

Yes I know the boost bug is bad but...... i know i cant afford it specially due to my wife getting laid off of work and I'm on med leave at work due to a broken hand :( I can see me maybe modding it more down the road just not in a long time...

Check the bores, measure to see if you can just have the cylinders re-honed or whether you will have to bore them .020 over. Just go with some NPR 1G pistons and rings(stock). Get the crank and current rods checked out to see if they are any good. New bearings, rod bolts, etc.

Might as well take the head off and take it apart, replace the valves if needed, check the valve springs with a valve spring tester to see if they are still in spec. Replace the valve guides and seals. Get the head milled.

After that, you should pretty much be set as far as internals go. Then you are just left with the oil pump, water pump, and all the timing components. You might as well do a balance shaft elimination while you are there.

partsdinosaur.com has great deals on timing components. Make sure to get a Gates timing belt.

most of the vendors on here sell BSE kits.

just find a stock block in decent condition and redo all gaskets/belts/tensioners and go from there. as long as your head is good you can re use it and continue on with life.

Nobody bothered to ask why it needs a rebuild in the first place.

reson y it needs to be rebuilt is cause i got the car in a trade an the motor was sitting in the hatch :(

so im starting from step one from the ground up to get her back up an goin on the road so we dont have to see another dsm in the graveyard. :(

in the hatch? its normally in the front passenger seat and the trans in the hatch. ROFL

is there a certian kit anyone really recommends... Ive been searching an i find mixed reviews on all sorts of them.. Ive found them for like 35-150 bucks. i know the saying you get what you pay for but almost all the kits look the same???

sorry for asking so many dumb questions i just wanna build it back up the right way so she can live for a while an not die right away.

well i should say the awd tranny was in the hatch an the head was on the back seat that was folded down an other parts kinda scattered everywhere with the door panels ontop of it all. the kid i got it from SAYS LOL "it drove fine u just wanted to make it a stroker so i tore it down." i really dont take his word for it but you never know LOL

Jdm longblock wouldn't be a bad option for you. Especially if you wanted to just drop something in and go. If you look hard enough you can find one with a b16g and 510cc injectors. You can also find them with just 450s and a 16g. Ive had great luck with them, and the motors are good for way more than you will ever want to throw at it. ;)

Go over to this place I heard aboot in Iowa.It has 5 1gs at it's location.

Non jdm..You mean usdm..There the same motor..If one more person says jdm this, jdm that.I'm gonna freaking loose it.We own american cars..They were all built a couple of hours from me.

Well there are galants and evo's in japan so you can get jdm engines that will fit these cars. They are usually low mileage pull outs.

True story..Lately there has been so much JDM/Crankwalk talk. It's getting on my nerves..You know
ROFL thats great cause i know that place an none of the engines run.

You told me about it..ROFL A little gas, new battery a few things, and they might fire up.

Actually most don't lie. I've used over 10 jdm longblocks in various different dsms and never had a problem out of any of them. If you understand emissions in japan you should understand why we get these motors. If your saying that not all of them have 40k, well your right. They all have differnet mileage, but in almost every case it would still be considered low mileage. Especially compared to what we have to work with over here. Almost all usdm factory long blocks are used up at this point. Finding one under 100k would be a find. I have WAY better luck out of jdm engines than I do usdm. Meaning condition. Add in the fact that you can find them with a 16g/510s, and it seems like a no brainer to me. They have other perks also. I've actually got them with the evo3 mani, turbo, and o2. The cylone mani could be sold if you didn't use it. Some also come with the jdm hla's which is little sought after. One port throttle body if you have removed emissions. They are technically the same engine, but in my ten years messing with them they are almost always in better shape than most used usdm longblocks.

sorry everyone been busy this week trying to find away to scrape up some money to try an goto the bone yard an snag a few parts but no luck as of right now.. All tho i did find a running motor for 700 not sure if its any good or not and i cant go look a it ethier due to it being almost 400 miles away :(

Don't buy it.

You could probably rebuild your block for 700.

Why not put the motor together, and compression test it?

Check CL..I check dub town every couple of days.
