Ok so I just bought this 98 GSX on Wednesday but finally got it home yesterday evening. There's a probably with the motor, the individual I bought it from has no idea whats wrong with other than theres a problem with the motor. I see oil all around the motor, possibly the head gasket is shot but it could be worse. I bought more because it had everything else and the body is in descent shape. The rear bumper could use some paint and I need to replace the driver side fender. Anyways on to my question. I was looking over the motor and noticed the turbo wasn't a T25, what gave it away was the j pipe that was attached to it. I can't really read the numbers on the turbo but I know it does have a TD05 housing because I can see that. I also noticed that the CAS on it has the 1g to 2g rewire job as well so that was a second hint that a swap as been done. What block exactly I'm not 100% until I pull it but I would guess a 6 bolt.

The car also had an exhaust leak because it melted the timing belt cover slightly. I'm wondering if this is a 2G head on a 1G block? I would assume so considering the rewire I explained earlier and also the intake manifold doesn't have the ECI Multi writing on it and most 1G or early 2G motors have that writing on it but I've seen a 99 that doesn't have it. I don't know if that was removed on the 97-99 models or 98-99 models. I've attached a picture to see if anyone could help me identify if that's what it is. Sorry for it being long winded.

you should check to see how many bolts are on the flywheel itself. That would give you a clear definition as to whether it is a 6 bolt block or not. You could just slide the tranny out of the way enough to take a good look at it.

I know that's the best way and I will pull the motor. But I was wanting to know if this is a 2G head or 1G. I'm guessing a 2G but I don't know of any other way to tell, I'm going off the way the intake manifold looks. I've heard the 2G flows better so the previous owner may have done a 1G block with a 2G head. I know that's what I would do especially if I had the 2G motor.

Like I said earlier I believe it's a 1G block because of the 1G CAS rewire. I can check for a crank sensor on the ofh as well.

For some reason my picture wasn't showing up. I've corrected it and now the image is showing.

Just look at the oil pan

+ 1 you can tell by the shape of the oil pan.

That's definitely a 2g manifold and throttle body. there aren't any 2g manifolds that say ECI Multi they are all the same as the one you have. There are several other reasons for having a 1g CAS besides a 6 bolt swap so check the oil pan to find out for sure.

Easy way to tell. you have a 7 bolt head for sure. I can tell just by the water neck.
Also, to determine the block, as you stated, you can tell just by a CAS rewire. looks like a green top CAS in the picture you shared. To be sure, just check to see if there's a sensor coming out of the back of the lower timing cover. if there isn't, then it's a 6 bolt block.
Also, as previously mentioned above, just feel or check the oil pan. the 6bolt pan will have a straight edge to it on the drivers side of the pan. A 7bolt pan will have an inward bend to it on the drivers side of it. Hope this helps :thumb:

I totally forgot about the oil pan. Man I've been out of the game WAY to long. This is what happens when it's been 9 years since you touched one. HAHAHA.

I'll check the oil pan tomorrow, thanks for the help. I need to read over the vfaq's again. I'm real rusty as you can tell.
