I recently bought a 96 tsi AWD with a 420a motor that was going to be dropped in it :ohdamn:.Instead I'm going to sell that block and use a 98 7-bolt block with a 96 head that came with the car. The only thing that has me stumped is I can't figure out if I'll still need to change the firing order and injector pins (on the ecu) since the 98 motor's have a different firing order? I was planning on using the stock camshaft position sensor that is under the Intake cam if it makes a difference.

ok assuming you have a 96 4g63 head and a 98 4g63 block ( your wording is a little confusing ) yes i think youll have to change the firing order. If i were you id simply hook everything up and see if it starts. If it doesnt then mirror the firing order from the spark plug lead. so i think it goes from left to right 4 1 2 3,,,, if the car wont fire,, then go left to right again,, 3 2 1 4,, she should fire one or the other.. if its the second one,, then you should eventually go into the ecu and swap some pins around..

if the firing order is different he would also have to change the injector order as well.

BUT, a block is a block... Yeah there are minor differences in the '96 to '98 block, however if he uses the '96 head and all the components from the '96 (except the block of course) then the firing order would be that of the '96. He wouldn't have to change anything.

Sorry if my wording was confusing. The car is a 96 AWD turbo talon but the guy I bought it from blew up the motor thanks to ebay parts, and was planning on putting the 420a motor in it. Not me, the only reason I took the engine with the car is because it has a 2g 4g63t head on it. I'm only guesing its a 420a block because the piston markings read 63DK which I've read are non turbo pistons.

My original plan was to connect everything up according to the haynes manual and if it didn't start, switch the plug wires around. That seems to be what everyone is thinking to.

Thanks guys, won't be putting the motor in for a couple of weeks as the car is being painted at the moment, and I still need a few odds and ends but I'll let you know how it goes.
