97 GSX For sale and have questions

Hey guys just looked at a 97 gsx with a 4g63 swap, it has 70,000 miles and the body is in decent shape , now the bad, he has the head off and tore appart. He was running quite a bit of boost and the head got really hot, lets just say its shot. He has a used head that he is going to throw in if i buy it. wondering what a good price is for the car as is with the motor tore appart in the car yet. I was thinking around $3500? here is the mods

1st gen eclipse 4g63 6bolt engine
arp headstuds
stage 1 shepardracing transmission
shepard racing transfer case
obx front mount intercooler
turbo xs blow off valve
1 bar tial external wastegaste/ open dumping
evo 3 big 16g turbo
full 3" exhaust
has ac but the belts been removed
walbro 255 fuel pump
safcII piggy back fuel controller
autometer boost/volts/an o2 narrowband gauges
full tokico suspension
front an rear strut tower bars braces

sorry for the all the reading but just wondering what is a good deal on the car, i know its hard by not seeing it to but just want some opinions.
 
if he has the reciepts to verify all of the work done, i might take a gamble on it. if not, id probably stay away. on the flip side of that coin you can probably find a perfectly good dsm for 3500 that you dont need to do much to. just my two cents.3500 is also on the high side for the car.
 
I wouldn't pay over $1500 if the body and harness is in good shape. Basically all your getting is a shell and a shell isn't even worth $1500. Sounds like a headache to me. Does he have paperwork for things like the trans etc? I'd pay $1500 tops if he does.
 
Hey buddy, do you have pics of the car? It's hard to tell just by reading :rocks: However, $3,500 is too high like what ^^these guys are saying, unless he installs it for you:sneaky:


And also a Stage 1 sheptrans is basically just a rebuilt stock trans, maybe a little better:]

shuld probally just look for something in good working order for that money man..

if your feeling risky, maybe 1200-1700 if hes got the recipts for the tranny, and you can verify its actually a 6bolt etc, i still wouldnt trust some1 thats running that setup with an afc and narrowbands at high boost like you said, sounds like a headache LOL.
 
No documentation at all, had a good story behind the transmission being rebuilt but give me 5 min and i could think of a good story behind one too. One other thing is i told him i would really like to drive the car and have it run. He said he could finish the head and get everything going so i could drive it in a few weeks. He is asking $4000 now what would be a good price for him to do all the work? Figure in $300 bucks for parts on top of the hours to take to fix

Shit I would only pay 3500 if it was running man. I really dont like buying cars that arent well documented due to you dont know who has been finger ####ing the car. Sorry for the language but its just simply put that way.
 
Looks like a pretty shell. No paper = no work done. I'll stick with my $1500 tops offer. You can buy a clean running 2g for 3-3.5, I'd pass.
 
A non running car is not worth much.

Personally 1500 is about tops for me. I do not see why people want you to pay for their parts in the car.... If you are wanting to recover parts price in a car for performance parts, SELL THE PARTS and not the car as a whole.

If he had 10k in the car and it is not running, 1500 as you will have to do all the work. If the car is worth more than that to this guy, he would be fixing it himself and selling it after getting it running at a reasonable price based on work performed and parts.

My .02 worth.
 
Thanks for the replies. Im going to tell him I need the car running and driving before anything happens. Any other comments anyone has about what to look for and what they think a running car like that is worth to them let me know!

If he let the head get that hot, there is a chance you will have other issues with the car unless he took the engine out as well and had it totally redone. Think about it. If it got hot, could have fried piston rings, turbo, and messed up the block. Unless he had everything, and I do mean everything checked out by a good mechanic that knows these cars, I would not even give more than 1500 running. Been there, done that. To put that kind of money/parts in a car and let it overheat to the point of frying the whole head is not the sign of a good car even if put back together. For the money, I would find another car for one main reason....He is not going to pay attention to detail putting it back together for you as he would for himself and that can be disasterous.

Better off getting it for 1500 and doing the work yourself, even if learning than, to let him do it. Either that or, find another car from someone else.
 
^^^^^ very good points there. Just one more question how much is a 4g63 motor? 1000-1500 is what I have been seeing. Maybe be smarter leaving me enough room for that before I get above book value I'm thinking
 
Try craigslist, ebay, and the classifies, i see engines now and then, got me a couple from fellow dsmers who where done with these things, my gain.
 
Found a few motors in my area, prices dont look to bad, still going to call around tomorrow and see what the local junk yards have for parts if worst comes to worst. Want to plan ahead so this thing doesnt bite me in the ACE if i get it and things are worse than he said. If parts are avaible im going to call back and make an offer. Ill keep you guys posted!

Just some clues as to the quality of parts he uses... I doubt seriously he ponied up for a shep trans rebuild...
 
For refrence i picked up a six bolt short block with an "alleged" 80,000 to 100,000 on it, it mic'd out good and the crosshatch looked great. I picked it up for three hundred, and that included shipping. I bought it here in the classifieds, so i would look around more for better prices on engines because theirs deals to be had if your patient.
 
Hey! Another Fargoan! Yeah $3500 is way too much for a non running car. Try to get it for$1000-$1500ish. It could be a damn clesn car, but it needs a lot of work. Feel free to contact me via pm if u need anything else or have any other questions.
