96 tansmissions questions

So I am looking into buying a 96 gst fwd manual and the tranny is a dogbox gone bad. Has loud bearing noise according to the local trans shop. The rest of the car is built and Im looking to put a used trans in it for the mean time until dogbox can redo the trans for me. My question is if memory serves right the 95-96 trans are different from the 97+ correct? My second question is that if I could get an awd manual trans how difficult is it to convert to fwd? Any help would be great. thanks

I have searched around on here and now vfaq and haven't found my answers yet. I always try to do my homework but I need some of the pros advice on this one. Basically what I need to know is what transmission I can use in my 96. Is it 95-96 or will any year talon/eclipse 2g trans work? I have access to a parts car that has a good trans but I believe its a talon transmission that didn't work with the kids 97 gst because of shift linkage (according to him anyway). Any experience would be great
