96 gst or 98 sgt spyder?

Both need engine work, the 96 engine and tranny are already out of car and has new head. Had a rod knock. The 98 spyder timing belt broke, damage unkown. $1500 for 96 and $2000 for spyder. Which one would you go for?

personally. id find one that runs and is clean. but if its clean and you got plans to fix the engine right and buy the right parts. id get the 96 gst. only because im not a big fan of spyders.

This is a silly question, it's going to be your car, they're both broken, they're COMPLETELY different animals on the outside, and completely the same on the inside, it's a 100% cosmetic choice (ignoring weight). The 98 may also have an H8 ECU, which is a very good thing.

If you do go with the 96, assume everything is broken, you'll need machine work, a new crank, new rods, may as well do new pistons, a full rebuild.

I, too would go for the spyder. If you arent keen on these engines, it helps to be able to take it apart yourself.

other wise when windy it doesn't sound so good.

Well engine wise there's pleny of hyandai versions of the 4G63 at the pick-n-pull. It has been discussed and proven that the internals are the same. And by amasement there's actually a 91 6-bolt 4G63 there too. The turbo and manifold were pulled but the block and head are still attached on tranny under the hood. I was planning on building a 420A to swap out for mine anyways so the whole engine building aspect is already gonna happen. I just noticed these cars and my tax return is on the way.

I wouldn't pay that much for either one of them. They are not worth it. You could get a running one for less than 2k...

2 99 GSX's and a 98 GST. Good deals just pop up. Im still waiting for another GSX too. Ive been waiting for 6 months or so and wont settle for anything less than what I want.

Now I have seen a few good deals from time to time. My buddy got a 2g with a destroyed motor. For a grand.

Had a brandnew or freshly rebuilt trans, JIC Coilover system, 20g, fmic, boost controller, Fresh paint, stereo, etc. Well over 1000$ of parts and shit that he sold besides the coilovers. Dropped his engine into and was good to.

I just found a 2g GST with extra parts (2gb front end swap parts, and stock parts to go back on it, some other misc stuff) Extra 16g, fmic, bov, exhaust, short shifter, and some more. 1500. Only thing that seems to be wrong is a bad headgasket, and I am not even sure it is the case.

The deals are out there, and usually popup right after you buy something and you could have got a much better deal. When I got my last 2g, I Payed 2500 for it and it need a lot of work. 2 weeks after I bought it, a 98 TSi fwd went up for sale, mint, nearly unmolested. Just some misc bolt ons, and a few painted interior pieces, boost/egt/voltmeter.

If your up for the rebuild, Id say go for it. Do not pay anywhere near 2k for it though.

Just do your homework about what usually has to be replaced when a timing belt goes and use that to drive the price down. Point out everything you can find wrong with it.

Ive bought a 2 GSTs off of craigslist, never paid the asking price. Ive also sold 5 cars on CL in the last 8 months (its a hobby) and I always post atleast 500-1000 over the price id take.

If you want a GST and are willing to put a grand into it before you drive it, I say go for it. offer the guy $1200 cash. see what he says. offer the cash in person after you check it out. find out the NADA, and the Edmunds if you want more ammo to drive the price down.

Even though Ive never seen this car, I know I wouldnt pay over 1500 for it in its current state. just based on year and NADA/Edmunds price. '
