my tranny just broke saturday. i looked forever for a 2g tranny, but didnt find one. i found a tranny for a 1g but the guy said it would bolt up to the motor but the mounts are different. he said he had a galant tranny that will bolt up just fine but will need to change the axle boot from the galant to my eclipse axle. i want to get everybodys opinion befor i do this setup.

You can use a 2.4L FWD Galant transmission as it is basically the same as a Spyder transmission. You need transmission specific axles, clutch and pressure plate (the clutch and pressure plate are not absolutely necessary; see post 6 below). Also know that the F5M31 is not as strong as the F5M33, your regular turbo transmission, so depending on how much power you are making, it may not last long at all.

i really just want to get the car running. this is my only car, and i need it to get to work. i do plan on rebuilding my tranny when i get enough money. As of right now they are selling me the galant tranny for $150. if i had a secondary car then yes i would wait and rebuild the tranny. My car is at stock boost. and i will probly wont push the galant tranny ass much if its that fragile compared with the original tranny.

so your saying i will have to change the clutch in order for the galant tranny to work

I'm saying the F5M31 and the F5M33 don't use the same clutch or pressure plate. But obviously this isn't the first time this issue has come up, so I did some deeper searching. According to multiple posts/sources, you don't have to change the clutch/pressure plate. I was wrong there and it looks like I'll get to go through more of my posts to edit the information. The axles are needed, however. The GST (F5M33) axles have 27 splines on the differential side while the 2.4L Spyder (F5M31) axles have only 25.

All the same, be aware of something like this occurring which was my initial fear, there being a difference in the two bell housings and all: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/drivetrain-tech/245094-2-4l-trans-vs-2-0l-trans.html

i Just bought the tranny today. Installing it this weekend with one of my friends, because im not a very good mechanic. I'm hoping the galant tranny doesnt break that fast on me with some weekend drag races. Thanks 19eclipse90 and everyone else for helping out. i will be posting the results when im done.

I finally got my car running. I did bump into some problems on the way. One of the problems was the passenger side axle was to big to go in the tranny. I went to a salvage, and picked up a galant axle. Well the new axle from the galant fits perfect into the tranny, but is about a inch to short. I had to go pick up some washer from napa auto parts.
When we finished i took it for a run. It feels that the first two gears are shorter and fourth and fifth are the same.
