I am wondering what is more reliable and less problems, ect?? A 96-99 GST Vs 94-96 3000gt (Non VR4)? I am going to be buying on or the other in the next week or two and am wondering which one to go with?
 
It really all depends how they're maintained. That's seriously 80% of the battle.

Judge by condition, and preference. The GST has considerably more potential than the SL, so if performance is your desired outcome then perhaps an SL isn't for you.

They are pretty slow....
 
Believe the GT is a SOHC 6G72 motor with one long belt running both cams with the belt running the water pump also. HP at 161. Same motor that went into the Chrysler minivans and the Galant.

The big issue with the 6G72, esp the SOHC heads is that the guides would love to drop and oil consumption became horrible, along with valve guides going bad (I'm sure you've seen Dodge/Chrysler minivans in the mid to late 90's vintage smoke like crazy when the light goes green. You knew they had the 3.0L V6 (6G72) with either shot seals or dropped valve guides). Shops would remove the heads and put a "C" clip at the head of the guides to keep them from dropping

The GST is a DOHC version of the 6G72 that also uses one belt to run all four cam sprockets along with the water pump. HP at 181. Galants also carried this motor.

VR-4 is the twin turbo version.

All uses 91 fuels.

Interesting on the DOHC version is the head looks identical to the 4G63, just chopped down to use three plug wires instead of four.

There wasn't a SOHC 3000GT made between 94-96. That motor didn't appear in the base 3000GTs until 97+ models. Stealths were a different story.

The DOHC version of the 6G72 also used one belt to run all four cam sprockets along with the water pump. HP at 220. Newer Galants and Diamantes also carried this motor.

As for reliability, DSM n/a motors are a little better than their forced induction motors. Although I will say I've had 4 DSM's, 1 with the 420A, and 3 with the 4G63T, never had any major engine trouble with any except my current one because I started modifying and upgrading and have had lots of issues with the engine. For you my biggest fear would be the driveline. My experience having 2 FWD and 2 AWD 5 speeds, I replaced/rebuilt the FWD 3 times, but never the AWD ones, even my current that has 167K miles and 450+ hp. Regardless of which you decide to go with, I suggest checking every little thing you can on the car before you buy it. (ALL fluids, belts, under carriage, any sort of rigging, and maintenance records)
