96 6bolt running lean spitting on highway

If i hook my mass air flow sensor up my car idles high between 1500 and 2000 rpms and when i got into a cruise position it starts spitting and sputtering until i let off the gas and keep throttle to the car but for some reason when i bought the car a red wire was cut from the maf and the car runs good under load at 15 psi but if i rev itup in neutral full throttle it will spit and sputter at 3500 rpms what could be my problem i want to get better gas mileage what else could i do

Hmmm If you have the manual for the car check the wiring diagram to see what one it is 1rst gen is a little different. But as far as the spittin/sputtering loosen your cam angle sensor and adjust your timing slightly not much though that could be your problem

O I forgot what mods do you have done with your fuel system, ect. bigger turbo? I'm guessing you have a a/f gauge to know that its running lean

Thank you I have just the 14b turbo with manual boost controller its pretty much stock I. Don't have a air fuel guage but I pulled my plugs andthey were a little white that's how I knew I was running lean people have said it could be a boost leake I have some minor cracks in my manifold imjust confused on why it doesn't have these problems if my maf is disconnected

the boost leak would make it run lean but the maf doesnt make alot of sense. just have to find out the wire. its the right direction to look for your problem im almost sure of it
