Okay guys I'm just looking for a yes or no answer to save some time on pulling my ecu..

I have a 1995 eclipse gsx and my next upgrades are going to be dsmlink and a fuel system to go along with my turbo..

You need an EPROM ecu to run link or get your stock ecu socketed correct?

I heard my 95 gsx was special because they all came with EPROM ecu's is this true?

Not all but many. Ecmlink can socket yours for an extra considerable (and obviously so considering the immense amount of work that goes into the job) fee but it might be more worthwhile to find an eprom one and socket it yousrself or have them do it depending on the purchase price of the ecu.

There are eprom ecus in the classifieds for less than a conversion job.

Just to clarify do you just need an EPROM ecu.. Or an EPROM ecu that's socketed? From what I understood you only needed the EPROM to have it work? Sorry if that's a dumb question new to dsm electronics

You do not need a factory EPROM ECU as ECMTuning can convert a non-EPROM to EPROM. This is only only an option on '95-'97 ECU's (non-black box style). The conversion will add a socket which is needed to run the ECMlink EPROM chip.
ECMTuning, Inc.

If you have a factory EPROM ECU, you need to have it socketed. This can be done by ECMTuning, a local who's knowledgeable about electronics and circuit boards, or yourself if you've got the knowledge and skills. It's not recommended you try this if you don't know what you're doing as you can easily ruin the circuit board. It's also recommended to replace the caps while you're in there to prevent them from leaking.

So regardless if I have EPROM or not I need to have it socketed? Correct?

If so why does everyone want the EPROM?

EPROM ECU = only need to socket Non-EPROM ECU = convert to EPROM (the conversion board includes a socket) Either way, yes, you must end up with a socket for the link chip. People like the EPROM's better because they're cheaper to get ready to run link, some people can do the socket job themselves, and it looks cleaner.

Okay cool thanks a lot for the info!

Its easy to tell and only takes ten minutes. Whats the mfr date on the door? The donor i picked up awhile ago was built 12/94 i think and it was eeprom.

No worries, we're all here to ask questions and answer each others' (a select few to just cause grief :ohdamn:). If you're green with electronics, I suggest you have ECMtuning do the socketing or conversion. It depends on your budget. However, they can convert 95-97 non-eprom ECUs so that it will work with the product. It just costs around $185.

But how will the date tell you? If some were EPROM and some weren't the same year the date shouldn't matter

Im not saying its a sure fire way bud. The earlier 95s seem a bit more prone to having the eeprom ecu. Thats all. Instead of conjecture, go pop a total of 2 screws and 3/4 bolts and find out!! There are ways you can see it without even taking the cover off the ecu. part number is usually accurate and there are pins you can see through a hole. But thats silly, its only 4 philips to get the cover off after you pull the ecu and you cant miss it.

That's probably what I'm gonna go LOL

Another bonus about SOME......rare, 95s: Check the rear rotors. You may be one of the very lucky ones. I cannot remember but i think it was the 95 that was mfr before 11/94(could be wrong, too lazy to pull rear brake upgrade thread). It was a small window obviously, but if yours happens to be that way you just got a bad ass rear brake upgrade for free. Theyre vented and larger than all other 2gs. Most came as talons though. I dont know why, just the way it is.

How would I be able to tell if I did though cause the guy I bought it from isn't very smart about his cars as I've been able to find out LOL.. But I do know it has that differential cause it ha factory stickers that says it! Is it any good or different?
