I am having a problem finding an axle for my 95 tsi. I am not sure what the spline count is.

A friend and i put a 2g fwd trans in his 1g. The axles we got from a 2g would not fit in his 2g trans. So we ended up using his 1g axles. Which were from a 92 model with the 6 bolt. The shaft that goes into the trans were too big on the 2g axles and would not fit in the 2g trans we had.

I am having the same problem with my tsi. Those same 2g axles we have are too big and wont go into my trans. But the 1g ones will. Is the spline count/shaft size different with the 95's?

The 2G axles came from a 96 GST. They would not fit in the trans in my 2G nor the 2G trans we used in my friends 1G.

I will try and get the trans serial code.

When I bought the car, I was told it had a Spyder trans in it. I then found out it was not a Spyder trans. The guy I bought it off of lied about a dozen of things. He said it had all kinds of aftermarket stuff and it turned out he was full of it.

Heres the serial code:
Kf5m312vvxf
Vt0377

Maybe that isn't the serial code. All the serial codes I find when searching start with a W. The code I posted above is stamped on the transmission and beneath my thermostat housing. That's the only number/code I was able to find.

The spline count on the axle that is in the car now is 25 (both trans side and hub side). On autozones site, they show the input shaft is 27 spline count and the output shaft is 27. Is input the trans side or hub side?

So I called them. They told me exactly what I found on the site about the spline count.

Then, I called advance. I ordered a right front axle for a 95 GST, 95 GSX, and a 94 GST. They could not tell me the spline count. I am almost positive that the 95 GST axle is not the axle I need. They were able to tell me that the 94 GST and 94 GSX have the same part number (interesting). And that did not specify whether it is auto or manual trans. One of these axles better friggen work. I am so confused. I always thought that ALL 2G axles were the same within the trans type, engine type, and drivetrain type.

Yeah, that's the serial code. And yeah, that's a 2G N/T Spyder transmission which explains why the 2G FWD turbo axles don't fit.

Search "F5M31-2-VVXF" or simply "F5M31" if you want to see more.

Alright, so what do I order?

Adding rep btw, you saved me a LOT of aggravation.

You won't be able to just find them new. You will have to buy the whole axle, or buy some old junk axles to take the cups from. I would check at some local salvage yards for manual transmission galants.

What am I missing?

If he doesn't have Spyder/Galant axle and needs to purchase it to get the cup, why put it on the 1G axle? Just use (rebuild if necessary) the axle you get for what it is.

:)

Well, I called Advance. Had a rough time with them. I guess there is nothing on their system that shows an Eclipse Spyder. So I had them check the Eclipse GS.

There were two different axles for the manual trans. One, had the same part number as the 95 GSX. The other had a completely different part number which leads me to speculate this would be for the 420A.

From this information, I am thinking that the axle listed under the Eclipse GS that has the same part number as the GSX, would be the axle needed for a Spyder.

If this is accurate, I have already ordered it. I ordered three axles which I stated a few posts above. One for a 95 GST, one for a 95 GSX, and one for a 94 GST.

One of these has to work.

Neither of the GST axles will work; each will be larger diameter than what you need at the transmission. According to Mitsubishi, the front right axle is not the same part number on the GSX and the turbo Spyder. However, I find the same information as you, that the aftermarket/replacement axle is the same.

The front left axle will clearly be different (intermediate shaft + halfshaft, etc.), so if that is what you are after, that won't work by itself either.

I just need the right front axle.

I did more research on Autozone's site. Check these out.

What I think is the Spyder axle- Duralast Reman/CV Axle (8742) | AutoZone.com

2G AWD Axle- Duralast Reman/CV Axle (8738) | 1995 Eagle Talon 4 Cylinders F 2.0L MFI Turbo DOHC | AutoZone.com

You will notice that the 4 diget part numbers on Autozone's site are different between the two. BUT, the input spline count, output spline count, compressed length, and weigh are all the same.

Try NAPA's site out. The GSX right front axle OEM part number is MB937746. The N/A Spyder is MB896796. Using the interchange system, both return NMD 958213 for a remanufactured unit.

I'm pretty certain you'll be fine. ;)

Using the same interchange system, the 1G axles -- both FWD turbo and AWD -- appear to have a shorter compressed length than the 2G axle by at least 1.25". I wouldn't use them.

Alright. I put the 1g one in yesterday, but that too didn't have a c clip. It worked. Then popped out just like the other one. It did appear a tad shorter. I am sure making sharp turns would cause problems with a new axle with a c clip.
