Can anybody tell me the spline count on the output shaft?
I'm finding several different explanations but some of them are different than others. Its a 91 gsx manual trans. with a build date of Nov 1990.
Can a dealer tell me by the vin# or is there a tag on the tranny?
Thanks

There are 2 types of DSM tranny's 22 spline and 23 spline. 1990 and some 1991 cars have 22-spline output shafts. Later 1991 through 1994 cars have 23-spline output shafts. Please note that 1991 cars that are 'later' (i.e. have later production or serial numbers) may still have the 22-spline shaft( my guess for the date of changing the splines would be in May, this is just an educated guess based on the fact that they changed from 6 to 7bolt engine in May of '92). The best way to check is to look, or to check part numbers with a dealership. The number of splines on the transmission output shaft must match the number of splines on the transfer case input shaft, or else the transmission will not fit. Alternatively, the transfer case can also be changed to match up with the transmission, with an associated greater cost. There have been several syncro changes over the years to try and combat problems with 1G cars not shifting well. It is generally accepted that later transmissions have superior syncro designs, so if all other things are equal a later version may be superior to an earlier version. yours with the production date of Nov. '90, will have a 22-spline count, I know that there are serial #s, and you may want to call the dealership with those #s and see if they can be 100% sure, but with that production date, Im 99% sure its a 22-spline, and on the back of 1G engines I know there are zebra codes(black bars that stores scan, not sure of their real name).
