hey, just joined dsmtuners and am looking for some help with my 91 talon...

I need to replace my engine and transmission, i recently purchased an engine, and am now looking for a transmission to link up to it- aparently 20 splines on the clutch side and 22 splines on the ptu side... i was wondering what kind of transmission this is and where i can get one for cheaper than the 2200 that the dealership is suggesting... although i talked to dealership and i may just be looking for just the housing for transmission, just wondering if the housing is the same for all 1g trannys... any help here is much apreciated, thanks,

All 1g DSMs have a 20 spline count to the clutch. and then a 22 or 23 spline on your shaft to your transfer case(depending when in 91 your car was made). Im not sure what you meant by ptu but i guess that's it.. you have a W5M33 transmission. I do believe the housings are the same, but i'm not positive. What's wrong with your current transmission? Check out ebay, the junkyard, or rebuilding yours. You should be able to do it for well less then 1k either way you go. Good luck!
 
Thanks black, searching the forums now i have equipped myself with various resources for finding the transmission i need- the dealership wont touch my old transmission because of the deep deep crakcs in it... kind of bs... i certainly am going to be looking around, again thanks black

Just to resurrect this post- i was wondering if i could use a KF5M22 transmission housing for my transmission... if not, what housing would i be looking for just a W5M33 transmission? thanks again...
 
Well if I were you I would just go to a junk yard pull a tranny without cracks in it, find out how many spline you have, and get one to match that, then send it to tre and have them do a basic rebuild for cheap.

that is my plan, just to find a 1g tranny, and put it in, i am just wondering if i can put a 23 spline housing in my 22 spline talon, without a 23 xfer case... or get a 23 spline tranny and take the 22 spline shaft and stick er in to the 23 tranny, and bolt right in, if not im having a 'fun' time finding just a 22 spline housing, or even a full 22 spline tranny in the pacifc nw... any info greatly appreciated, thanks, jon
 
so i amjust wondering my options here, and what would be 'worth it' (aka, cheaper) i think i have them:

1.new 23 spline tranny with 23 spline t-case
2.new 22 spline tranny
3. new 22 spline tranny housing, which i would then transfer my gears over into... (this is the option i have been searching as of late)

i was just wondering if there are any other options really for me in getting an awd 5sp tranny in it...
any help much appreciated, thanks,

Not to jack your thread, but i know there are differences between the 90 tranny and everything else, and is it weaker or does it just have less splines.
 
I believe the split of 22/23spline to the outputshaft for AWD, happened in 1991. I really haven't heard of anyone claiming one is stronger then the other, or people wanting to swap out(although there are some out there, but who knows why)

And Jon,
I would be junkyard hopping and looking for a 22spline tranny housing, or a dead transmission you can get the housing . That's probably your cheapest route.
