Hey guys, im new to this site and new to eclipses in general. I recently bought an 98 gst off one of my friends for a steal, it had a 6bolt swap in it and he blew the engine, then bought a new 7bolt swap but the furthest he ever got to installing the new engine was mounting it in the car, then the car just sat in his driveway for about a year until i just came and took it off his hands. I have another buddy who does some seriously sick stuff with hondas, but this is the first mitsubishi either of us has ever encountered and we've both been working at it for quite some time but were stumped now.

I know the engine that is in the car runs fine because the dude i got the car off of actually drove the car that the engine was previously in and he said it ran like a champ, then he paid for the engine and the guy he bought it from pulled the engine for him.

Unfortunately the dude I bought my eclipse off of doesnt know jack about them (hence the car sitting in his driveway with a fresh unhooked engine for a year) and he told me the engine came out of a 99 gst. Well the more work ive started to do on this car, and the more ive researched about the engine ive come to find out its actually a 95/96 swap into my 98 car. Im not sure what wiring harness is in the car now, but it's got to be either a 6bolt harness or the original 7bolt 98harness that came in the car (they may be the same, i dont really know) but in either case, my biggest trouble now is coming from hooking up the cam sensor. obviously on the 95/96 engines, the cam sensor is on the drivers side of the engine, but on my harness the plug is on the passenger side. Ive got everything else on the car hooked up, and everything else seems to be in order, but the car wont get spark and ive narrowed it down enough to suppose that its got to be the cam sensor thats holding me up.

I tried taking apart an old wiring harness from another car and using the male and female ends of those plugs and some wire to connect the sensor to the plug on the harness, but ive still got nothing. I'm extremely stumpped, if anybody's got any ideas/suggests i would definitely appreciate them! unfortunately there arent any real dsm entusiasts that I know around my area so I havent been able to have a real eclipse guy come down and take a look, but im hoping somebody on here may know something that can help. Thanks!

does the wiring harness have separate 3 pin plugs for both the cam and crank sensors (one at the front of the engine and one at the back of the head) or is it just one plug with 4 pins at the back of the head by the throttle body? that will tell you if it is a 6 bolt wire harness or an unmolested 98 harness. i am sure someone else will post up the link to the correct wiring for doing a 6 bolt swap if i don’t find it first but that should help you out as well.

I may be mistaken, but the 95/96 wiring isn't all that different from the 98..

The 6bolts only came from 90-first part of the 92s. There would be no reason to swap the 95/96 wiring into a 98, and its a waist of time to swap the 1g wiring in it.

So, your putting a 7bolt in the 98? Are you using the same head that was on the 6bolt? Was the old CAS a adjustable one? And the new one a fixed one? We have to know what you actually have in the car to help, and what you had in the car before.

If the last set up used the 1g CAS, then he probably has a adapter wiring installed for it, which wont work with the 2g CAS.

I'm a little confused, so more info, like what CAS you have, and what was in there before?

I have same problem a 99 Gst, i got a 95 7 bolt just bought, crank sensor is under the cam gear, my old 7 bolt has CAS on passenger side of the valve cover, the cam gear is not tapped for CAS the bolt holes is on the side of the head , I read some where, that i can just use the 1g method, i found the adapter harness but there is 2 diff ones, 95-96 has two pigtails on one end, whereas the 97-99 has one pigtail and one bare wire. my car is a 99 and motor 95, im going to buy wire adapter but which one, my 95 motor has cam and crank sensor on driver side, i am planning to buy 1g CAS (Black one ) will this work, just wanted another opinion. Thanks in advance

I have done this before when I put a 95 head into my 97 gst. I had to splice the wires together in order to use the stock connection. It is pretty easy to do. All you need to do is get 3 wires long enought to go from the wiring harness on the passenger's side of the engine to the connector on the sensor on your head which is on the driver side of the engine. You will want to use those in-line connectors to splice in the wires so you dont have to cut any connectors off. Then just match the colored wires from one side to the other with the extra wire and you will then have no trouble starting up the engine since it will now get the signal it needs to fire the plugs. Good luck and pm me if you need more detailed directions/pictures :hellyeah:
