Looking for a quick fix to my problem.
Blew my tranny on my 95 talon.
A guy in town have a 98 Eclipse GS that he's selling the engine and tranny for $400.
Anyone know if this will drop into a 95 Talon Tsi?

call your local salvage yard, they will be able to tell you exactly what year, makes and models interchange with your car, where they may be located and how much. If they are not to big on customer service go to Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market Is the tranny on the 420a even on the same side of the motor? I tend to just shake my head and walk away when some one ask for help on their eclipse and opens up to a chrysler motor!:tease:

be careful swap in an eclipse tranny they have different gear ratios than the talons do

No they don't. A 5 speed Eclipse GST will have the same trans as a Talon TSi. Same goes with automatics. As long as they are both either 1g or 2g cars, they will swap over without a problem.

To the OP, if the GS is a hard top it'll have the 420A Chrysler engine and trans. It is not compatible with a TSI, TSi AWD, GSX, GST... any factory turbo'd model. You need to find a 4g63T engine and trans. The early 4g63T cars had a 6 bolt engine. It can be swapped into your car if you want. Search for "6 bolt swap" to get more info. From 1992.5-1999 they have a 7 bolt engine. If you want to keep the crank angle sensor you will need a 7 bolt engine from 95 on up. Also, the Cam angle sensor on 95-96 cars was different than those on the 97-99 cars. So if you get a later 7 bolt engine some rewiring of the cam angle sensor will be required because the signal is inverted. So the most straight forward simple solution engine replacement option for you would be to find a 95-96 engine. With a little bit or wiring, a 97-99 engine will be fine. With a little bit of wiring, some grinding, a few extra bucks on other little parts for the swap, you could have the 6 bolt engine which is the strongest factory engine for the DSM cars.

This is true for the most part. The splines did change a bit between certain years on the 2G's. You will want to do some research as to which years are compatible.

This why people get new member status.

LOL I'm keepin my mouth shut and just asking the questions.
Thanks for all the info guys.
This site is SOOOOO F'ing helpful
Yes i do just have a Tsi, not sure about this supposed 98. The guy hasn't gotten back with me yet.
So it might all be pointless.
Thanks again guys

So if i have a 2g 95 ecipse with a 420a, to make a 4g63t fit all i need is to swap my tranny and motor? Will i need to upgrade anything? Eg. Fuel pump, radiator, ecu, etc?

Along with the tranny and engine, you'll need the ECU, ECU harness, intercooler, fuel pump, and I believe the power steering setup is different.

I would not recommend this swap. It is expensive and a bit more complex than just "plug and play".

You'd need to replace harnesses, weld in new mounting points on the chassis, etc. For what it would cost and the amount of time it would take, it'd be cheaper (and better) to sell your current car and buy a factory turbo car.

What i was thinkin is grab a 95-96 junk dsm with a 4g63t and just take the parts i need right now. I dont mind buying the little extras, just checking that the engine will fit, either bolt in or by installing mounts once i have swapped trannies? Most of those parts should already be in the donor car, and will buy what is needed.

The main reason i dont restart with a new car with stock turbo is how much i have already sunk in my car, also my insurance is running $350 a month as is and a turbo they can proove i have will not help. A lot of people have suggested the new car route, but im sticking with my baby LOL

It's more than just installing mounts, you'd have to physically cut the current mounting points off your car, cut the turbo ones out of the donor car, and then weld them in place in yours.

You have to remember that the 420a engine and transmission are on opposite sides of the engine bay as the 4g63 engine and transmission. Also, the 420a is a Chrysler engine, and the 4g63 is a Mitsubishi engine. You'd have to replace probably 90% of the wiring in the vehicle. (Engine harness, front body harness)

Im sure this is a point of ignorance so sorry, but if its just cut out of the old one, weld into my current car, that doesnt sound overly complex as long as they arnt cut wrong and they are welded in the proper spot

Sorry my phone is being really ### right now and keeps wreckin what im typing. I have been hunting around and no one has mentioned that they are not positioned the same. Providing i redo my wiring cause there are issues there, is there a way to line them up?

From what I've seen, the driver's side mount would be somewhat of a pain to remove from the donor car. Realistically, if you have a full GST to work from, you can do it, it'll just be time consuming more than anything.

The mounts themselves are essentially opposite. The transmission mount that is welded to the frame rail is on the passenger side of the GST/GSX, but on the drivers side of the RS/GS. The engine-side mount is welded onto the strut tower area on the drivers side of the GST/GSX, and to the strut tower area on the passenger side of the RS/GS. When I get home on Tuesday, I can take some good pictures of the turbo mounts for you if you'd like, as I have the engines pulled in both my talon and my GSX shell.

If you've never done any sort of structural welding before, then I would definitely suggest having someone with some experience do it.

Also, having never attempted the swap, I can't say for sure if there's any other differences.

I dont touch welding or anything too major. I am somewhat of a noob and am learning off this car. This will require a lot more time *sigh* although it is good to know before i invest in the parts. Any suggestions for a more compatible engine? My 420a is junk since the last owner left the car sitting and i dont want to invest anymore in, race wise, what is a toy. Other wise i will just keep researching this mod or the 6g7x/6a12tt i was looking at before.

This thread has a nice little list of swaps and stuff, and 2GNT.com - home would probably have the most information on engine swaps for the non-turbo cars. Hope this helps!

It sucks that you aren't in Western Canada, I have a 97 GSX shell literally just sitting around doing nothing.

Aww that does suck haha, but thank a lot for the help. All im used to hearing is "sell it and start over" and i spent to much time and money in this to do that. Just selling this woud lose me a couple grand haha

I learned that the hard way LOL, bought it sept 10 and spent $1k on the car then $3k bringing it to life, getting it on th road this passing feb. Im not done yet though, need a new radiator and some small body work, engine has a lot of small problems hence my looking for a swap, my header is cracked and the exaust has a hole in it *deep breath*.

So, i get where everyone tells me to sell it nd start over. But im stubborn and its my first car, if i have to sell it a condition will be pull my body out of the wreck haha

Ok, one last question from me, the 4g63t from a gst and 420a gs are reversed in the positioning of tranny/ engine mounts, but wht if i take a 4g63 n/t out of something? There are tonnes of cars that run that engine and one has got to fit? Im gunna start lookin into it, help would be awsome. I already found a 90-94 talon and eclipse 4g63 so just need to know if it is the stock turbo that is getting in my way?
