Will do, I've been looking on EBay, just not sure I want to pay $65+ for a new one, I will probably upgrade turbos sooner than later, so it'd be somewhat wasteful... ;-)

Well I finally hauled my engine home, glad to have it home.

I installed the two small metal timing covers on each side of the head, I took the valve cover off and took some pics of the head/valvetrain. I also bolted up the water pipe, exhaust manifold, engine lift bracket and then mocked up the t-stat housing/water neck.

Sorry all, I was out of town last week, I got home Friday so I got back to working on the DSM. I'm still trying to finish up all the engine related items. I cleaned and painted the CAS, had to use a shorter stud to mount it due to not using the rear lift bracket. I then installed the last metal t-belt shield (which I had to remove the tensioner/idler bracket to do) and used the alternator bolt for the tensioner tool. I also swapped out the oil pump gear (had a pretty good chunk broken off of it) and then I ported the OFH and started to mock that up...

Anywhere, here are the pics.

More updates; I worked on the engine more today, I installed the turbo, water lines, oil cooler sandwich adapter, oil filter and finalized mounting the OFH (bought new bolts for it). I cut the mounting bolt from the water cooled adapter to mount my aftermarket cooler. I then dumped in 4 quarts of 10w-30 and spooled up the oil pump w/my cordless drill. I verified oil at each lifter/rocker, cam feeds and the OFH. I then put the t-belt on, adjusted the free play on the hydraulic tensioner and the tensioner bearing, I still need to rotate the engine and verify it stays in time.

Next I started on the lower timing cover, need to make a few small repairs and then paint it.

Here are the pics.

Ok all, I have a few questions, I am trying to get the oil feed line mocked up and have been reading up a lot on the subject.

Here are my questions/issues:

I want to run the oil feed off of the OFH (No B/S, ported OFH, not sure on O/S yet), what size/pitch fitting do I need to do this? I like the steel 90* ones Ive seen people running with the Holsets (I have a braided 4an line I believe)

Do I need a restrictor for the 14B?

Do I still need to verify/tune the oil pressure for the 14B?

Please help all.

If its a journal bearing turbo, than you should not need a restrictor. Not sure about the OFH thread size on a 1g but the -4an sounds about right.

Ok cool, I was just concerned because I have heard that it will be 100+ PSI off the OFH...

I thought the OFH was the same from 90-99'? Im just curious if it is standard pipe thread or not. I guess I just need to remove the plug and see.

I also forgot to mention that I will be using a 10AN drain, so I think the feed should be ok off of the OFH.

Update:

I did some more reading lastnight and decided just to feed off of the head... Thats where it was OEM and I feel it should be fine even with the B/S delete, I installed a 10AN drain as well. I started to route it all lastnight and figure out what parts I needed, luckily I had everything I needed but one 90* swivel for the turbo connection. I ordered one lastnight so hopefully that will be wrapped next week. I tracked my STM order and it should be here today or tomorrow as well.

I considered running my oil feed from the head but decided against it because I got the feeling from other articles that while consistent, the pressure is a bit lower and it was more suited for ball bearing types.

Do you have an oil pressure gauge?

I agree, I read some many conflicting opinions that I decided to just go with this and see... it has obviously worked for many, many cars and it was the way Mitsu designed it for this turbo. I feel that the pressure should be high enough with the b/s deleted, I plan on using pretty thick oil also, so time will tell I guess...

I plan on checking the pressure at the turbo when I get the engine in and running also...

Update: I've been working on the engine and accessories more, I repaired/sanded/painted the lower timing cover, then I put the pulleys on and mocked up the upper timing cover.

Next up I'm working on mounting a GM alternator in place of the A/C compressor and then start cleaning up the engine bay/wiring/etc

Update: I have all the small water lines hooked, made a custom line to delete the oil cooler, I didn't want to just cap it off at the water pipe. Ive been working on the alternator relocation as well, I have a spare GM alternator from my 1990 Buick I will rebuild and utilize... I am using the factory a/c bracket for mounting and hope it works out. I am still fabing up the mounting points and will post some pics soon. I am basically just using some angle iron bolted to the a/c bracket and the upper mount off of the tensioner mounting points from the a/c. My concerns are the distance from the block (I'm about an inch aft of the a/c compressor right now) and the pulley to sub frame clearance. I'm hoping to squeeze the alternator in towards the block a bit more and will keep the body inboard as much as possible.

Also hoping to pick up a WGA from a friend and then start working on the engine compartment. I'm going to clean up the wiring harness, sort out the emissions equipment, clean up the battery relocation and prep the bay for installing the engine/trans.

Here are the pics, let me know what you guys think, I havent found any good pics to compare my relocation too, think it will work?

Welcome back to DSM's. We got bit by the bug about the same time, but I have stayed infected. :) My goodness that car must have sat for a long time! That dust looked thick! Looks like you are taking the time to clean everything up and make sure its all working properly. Should be real nice once you get it put back together. Was very glad to hear you repainted those ugly ass blue interior pieces. Those looked like shit. Good luck!

Thanks man, I stayed involved w/the community, just finally got one of my own again! I originally wanted a 2G car, but have always loved this car and couldn't pass it up. The car has sat for years (probably 3+ since it drove last) and sat for years before that, I couldn't bear seeing it just sitting there anymore, it was time to bring it back to life!

I'm trying man, I really prefer the clean look and wanted everything on the engine to be black or aluminum colored. The interior was totally hideous/riced out, I still have to do something w/all the trunk panels and the door/rocker covers (still blue)... I'm not sure if I should try to repaint them or find another set of panels...

Thanks man, I'm getting there, hoping to be boosting by spring.

I don't know bout the duplicolor, but the flameproof stuff is awesome. Pained many exhaust manifolds and turbine housings with it and none have faded. I do a lot of hard mountain driving and without it the two glow hot red\orange. Kinda pretty actually.

Anyway build looks awesome. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for the info man, I was hoping it would last until I swap turbos at least... I used to love looking at the glowing red manifold on my other car, usually after a run up Lookout Mtn, so I know what you mean!

I appreciate it, this my first DSM build of this scale, so Im learning as I go. :D

Update:

I played hooky from work today so I could make some progress on the car. I cleaned and painted all the engine mounts, trans bracket and both roll stops, just need to unbolt and paint the trans mount. I'm almost done w/mock up on the alt relo, need to get a belt and a new tensioner pulley (I need a smooth one instead of the ribbed factory pulley). I am using the factory a/c tensioner for the alternator so I can solid mount it and be able to tension/change belts easier.

Then I started working on the engine bay, I starting pulling off unnecessary items and cleaning up the harness. I am going to lower the harness and try to do a "mini tuck" for now, I'd like to do a full tuck, but I need to get the car back together and running first.

I will post pics in the morning, I didn't take any while I was working.

Pics of the progress from today:

A few more tweaks, I moved the Aeromotive FPR to the firewall w/an aluminum bracket and flipped the injector resistor around for better routing. Next up is cleaning up more of the harness routing and then I'll finalize the battery wiring.

Here is another pic. (Crappy cell phone flash)

Nice I gotta make me a bracket for my afpr as well grab a wire harness, and in the future strip and paint my bay, to match my new color for the dsm, and do some energy suspension upgrades all over and stiffen up the chassis while I powder coat some more parts and clean up some surface rust, then relocate the battery, nice build subscribed.

Thanks man, yea I need to trim the corners and finish out the bracket still, its in mock up. I'd love to be able to do a respray (factory color w/clear), but its just not in the current budget/time frame...

The batt relocation is definitely nice for cleaning up the engine bay, I have a few things in mind to clean it up and hopefully insure the charging is adequate. I still need to come up w/a good solution for an exterior shut off switch, but that's down the road... I really just want to get this thing together and running, then refine from there.

Progress has been slow, it has been very cold here and my garage is not heated. I did buy a few more misc parts and cut out the mounting plate for my distribution blocks. I am going to mount the power and ground blocks on the side of the frame rail with the existing battery tray bolts. Also think I am in the final stages of my alternator relocation project.

I will post up some pics soon hopefully...

I considered running my oil feed from the head but decided against it because I got the feeling from other articles that while consistent, the pressure is a bit lower and it was more suited for ball bearing types.

Do you have an oil pressure gauge?

Just a small correction. All 1g Turbo's (13g, 14b, 16g) are journal bearing and designed to run from Head pressure oil feed (stock from factory). The 2g turbo's (T-25) is also journal bearing, but has a restricter in the OFH feed to reduce the oil pressure. If you run it off the OFH without a restricter, you WILL blow the oil seals if the pressure is too high (like @ wot/5000 rpm), then you get a smoke show.

Better off running from the head if you can.

thomcasey,

I appreciate it, that was the general consensus from what I read, I wont be feeding off the OFH until I upgrade turbos. Id like to run an HX35 or 40, but I need to have more supporting mods done before I go there...

Im sure I will need more injector (especially if I go E85), probably more pump (I only have a single Walboro 255) and then theres an FMIC, manifold, etc to consider as well... all in good time I suppose.

Finished up the alternator relocation using the factory a/c bracket and tensioner. I had to swap out the pulley for a smooth one because the belt runs under the pulley instead of over it, I'm hoping the tensioner will tighten up ok since I'm using it to push down instead of pull up. I had to order a belt to get the correct length, should be in tomorrow, then I'll do the final install and see how it goes. I then cleaned up and installed the power steering pump and belt so finally done with that.

I also picked an engine hoist so I can get the engine installed to wire it up and see how everything fits.
