Hello,

I have a 92 laser turbo, auto with only 22K miles. While driving the car the other day I noticed it started to skip shifts (stayed in third gear). I went home a did some research and found that the TCM can go out on these cars after some mileage. But with only 22K do you guys think the reason for limp mode is the TCM or something else?

Also, can someone give me a detailed description of where the TCM is located and how to get to it.

Any help is greatly appreciated,
-ARC

So the TCM fixed limp mode by now the car stumbles and acts like it doesn't want to rev when in gear. When the car is in natural it revs fine but as soon as I put the car in gear it won't rev? Could it be the timing belt is slipping when the car is under load? I'm getting fed up with this car...

No its not the timing belt slipping, if the timing belt slipped you would be rebuilding the head right now.

I'm not really sure, does it stumble like its running too lean(this is my guess) or does it smell like gas and break up while you are driving? Its probably an easy fix, don't get too fed up. They are worth it.

As for the timing components go to partsdinosaur.com he has the BEST deals around.

actually here is the link. It comes with everything you would need. Its a lot cheaper then what a shop would cost to order the parts. Even comes with a water pump.

Thanks very much, I thought this site would be a bunch or "Fast and the Furious" type individuals but you guys are alright.

I just got off the phone with a guy at Mudpit performance and he said it sounded like a boost leak. We'll see, I hope it's simple.

So, keeping the car out of boost it acts fine. It's only when the car uses boost that it acts crazy. I would say it has a boost leak then.

It is definately possible. The easiest way to tell would be to do a boost leak test. You should also buy an aftermarket boost gauge, the stock one is very inaccurate.

Nothing was wrong with the car, the TCU had to relearn the shift points. Car shifts great and runs smooth. but under WOT the car shifts at 5500, is that correct shift points and that's even in Sport mode.

Ahhhhhhhhh!!!!

Now it's messing up AGAIN!!!

It's not wanting to rev, it acts fine for a minute then starts wanting to die and the motor will hardly rev... The DSM isn't making a good first impression. Any ideas?

did you do your boost leak test?

There is a thread right HERE that will help you with that

Check your connections at the battery. There are 3 leads that come off of the + post. If it or the - side are loose then that will cause all kinds of random problems.

yep, time to build a boost leak tester

Common places for boost leaks, besides the charge pipes, would be the throttle body shaft seals, and BISS screw, and with a car that old, some vacuum lines might be cracked. Look up proper BISS adjustment before you mess with the BISS screw though.

Nice find!

That is what I'm afraid of, my mechanic told me it was either fuel pump or leaky ECU caps.

Thanks guys, I appreciate it!

Changing ECU caps are simple. Go to radio shack and pickup matching caps, soldering iron, flux, and desoldering wire or pump. Make sure you solder the new ones in the same polarity as the old ones.

The ECU was leaking SO bad my mechanic couldn't believe the car drove at all. The car was still missing after the new ECU so the problem was deemed an ignition problem. After changing plug wires the car is in good running order FOR NOW.

No boost leak yet.
