1G 92 awd trans direction help

I picked up a used 80k (allegedly) 1g awd trans. After some reading last 4 digits NPZS is a 89-90 trans, I have the 22 spline t-case also.

My laser is a 92, with a 23 spline t-case and a trans that grinds REALLY bad, but is a 6/5/4 laser.

engine is fresh put together ready for 500+ but I’m shooting for a solid 400 to the wheels by the end of May to be driving again

Looking for direction as the trans looks clean, t-case look like it leaks really bad and is well used. But unknown of what condition either are in.

If that is a 89-90 trans I say run it. Mine has 130k miles and still no grinds with 50+ lb/per min from an fp red, the early year gear sets are best.

I'm not sure what the question is. If you're running the 90 combo, you may need to get 90 shifter cables and a 90 shifter. There's a huge thread on this conversion. Just type in something like 90 vs 91 shifter or something similar. I'm running the 90 combo in my car and I switched everything to 90 parts, but people will argue you don't have to do that.

I agree with Vegas. The 90 trans has a different set of cables, shifter and cable mounting bracket along with a few other quirks from 1990.
@pauleyman has had quite a few apart and of course the trans rebuilders on here might be able to chime in and give their 2 cents on this too.

The biggest issue i have with a 90 is the intermediate shaft is smaller. Ive seen it shear. Pitch for 3rd gear is different also. 90 will not accept 1/2 double cone synchros. The last 90 i did for myself i didnt switch the cables as i had a 90 but instead i ran some 91 parts to allow doubles. I actually ran the weaker gvr4 input but i didnt care on a lower hp car. I wanted the taller 1st. 90 is not a stronger trans

It’s funny I haven’t opened a trans before so I’m certainly no expert, ive just seen pictures and red comments on the physical bigger and thicker size of the 90 gearset. But I guess not everything on them is stronger, and I’m sure I’m on borrowed time with mine, I’m definently not looking forward to my limited rebuild options on this bastard trans . From what I’ve red even with the hassle of having to swap over 90 parts to run it I bet it would outlast a 93 and up trans

The gears are not bigger. The 3/4 hub sleeve is the problem. The larger synchros 93 up can split.

Higher hp car also like to strip the teeth off third gear. Ive always been a believer its a gear separation issue due to bearing plate flex. Just my opinion.
