Hi Guys,

Just have a quick question. I'm about to swap a 91 tranny with a 22 spline output shaft in my 92 Talon. I've read that its pretty much simple to swap out the output shaft so it will fit my 23 spline transfer case.

My question is if there would be a problem with the shift linkages. I heard the shifter is different between the 90 and 91-94 is this true? I should have no problem with the linkages if the trans I'm putting in is a 91 right?

Also does any one have detailed instructions on how to swap the output shaft? I'm concerned about popping the viscous coupling out. How can I safely pry it out?

Yes it should work fine. Check out this if you are interested. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/drivetrain-tech/93739-90-shift-linkage-vs-91-94-shift-linkage.html

I can't find the link I had on swapping output shafts. I used 2 flat head screwdrivers to pry equally on each side of the VC once I removed the circlip. Watch for the little 1/4" ball bearing to fall out. I'd change the shaft seal while you're in there if you have one. It's in the bellhousing side of the tranny.

Check this while you're in there. Shifter wiggle/movement while in gear? That covers some of it except for actually removing the shaft.

There is no forcing it involved, it should pull right out if you take the right things apart.

From what I know the 90 linkage is the two adjuster type, 91+ has the single adjuster type. The cabin shift is different for a 90 to 91-94 and 90 they also used the offset bracket for the linkage to tranny. If you have a 90 tranny in a 91+ you must swap all the parts to make it shift correctly. If its 91+ you should not have to touch anything.

You can date the tranny by the 10th letter or number on the tranny VIN. Also as far a I know the 22 and 23 spline shafts are the same on the input side going into the tranny. You count the teeth going into the trans case but you knew that already. The 22 spline shaft should pop out like butter and pop your 23 in.

Some early 91 cars will have a 22 spline tranny but all after 6/91 have a 23 spline with only a few exceptions. This info came from TRE and DSM Graveyard. Hope this helps.

I just got done ripping my tranny 23 spline from a 91 out of my 93 and I am about to be installing a 22 to 23 spline from Jon @ DSM Graveyard personal tranny he had in his shop car. I asked about this conversion since the tranny I bought is a 22 spline and being ignorant and never buying anything but exactly what I needed in the past wanted to ask for myself.

Hope this helps you. I like to call the people who do this stuff for a living if I ever have any doubt or just want to ask a stupid question. Andy as well and Jon and I had several conversations on the topic and just to chat they are unbelievably nice and were more than willing to answer any questions.

Thanks guys,

Ill start work tomorrow. I'm hoping I can have my trans out and swap the input shafts by the end of the day.

You may need the smaller diameter 91 axles to boot. You can find this out once you have an axle out of your car. Just try and stick it in the 91 trans real quick before you go any furthur.

I just put a 91 22 spline tranny in my 90. Those are the years that have the most issues. All I had to do to get it to shift correctly was change the bracket on the trans that holds the shifter cables with the u-clips in it. You could be fine without changing any parts if you have the long shifter arm on both the transmissions. A way to tell if you have the correct cable setup is to manually shift the trans into 4th gear. (all the way toward the radiator) Then take the cable and see if it will go over the eyelet on the shift arm. If it slides right on suspect all is good. If it doesn't, try swapping that bracket first.

Swapping the output shaft isn't too hard either. Should take like 2-3 hours max, seeing as your tearing into 2 transmissions. You only have to remove the end case from the trans, all the other sections stay together. Honestly, the hardest part is probably going to be getting the circlip on and off without stretching it out. Here's a link.

You also might want to get new end nuts for the shafts! I think it is recomended!

the car is a 92 so Im assuming the axles from 91 and 92 would be the same. I looked up the transmission codes and apparently the 91-94 dsms have the same trans with probably the exception of the output shaft. yeah Ill definitely stick the axles once the old trans is out.
