Hi all,

I have done some searching and did find some info regarding differences between 90 and 91-94 manual trans. However, I have a few specific questions that I couldn't find answers to.

1. Is it possible to have the 90 style transmission in a 91 DSM from the factory? How about in a 92'?
2. Would the best way to verify be to use measurements? I found a thread with measurements of the different parts...didn't know if there are other ways to ID.

What makes this tricky is that if 90 transmissions ended up in later models it is difficult to be 100% sure you are getting what you need when you buy from someone else regarding cables, brackets, and levers. They may think they are selling you what you need but it's still from a 90'.

Also, any advice on where to find these parts other than a local salvage yard would be greatly appreciated!

If you download asa you'll get a parts breakdown by build date. The trans are stamped with a code also that points to model year differences. I doubt a model year 91 has a 90 trans in it u less somebody put one there in which case the vin stamps wont match either.
What are you trying to do?

I don't see a problem as long as you have a matching transfer case, I believe the shift cables are different also. I put a 93 trans in my 90 without any problems, I swapped cables at the same time as well as transfer case.

I am putting a built 94 trans into a 91. It had a 90 trans in it, so that's why I was asking. Now I know that someone must have swapped it in since they wouldn't come that way from the factory. I have everything I need except for the shift cables, bracket, and shifter assembly.

Ok, this is actually a well covered subject, but here's some details from a transmission builder.

If you are using a 90 trans without modification:
*Use a 90 shift lever assembly in-car
*Use 90 shift cables
*Use 90 2-piece shift cable bracket on transmission - MD730758
*Use a 90 transmission shift lever (The lever that bolts onto the transmission) -- it has a longer lever than a 1991-1994, and the 2G 95-99 versions. Use MD719962.
*Use a 90 transmission shift selector arm (The lever that is installed into the transmission bellhousing and retains the shift selector) -- it is shorter than the 1991-1994, and a different curvature than the 95-99. - MD723865 (89-90.6)
*Use a matching 22-spline transfer case (which were available in all-aluminum housings, or the later 90.7-1991.4's were available as a 22-spline in a cast iron front housing).

If you are trying to use a 91-94 transmission in a car with 90 shift cables and 90 shifter, you need to do the following:
*Use 90 2-piece shift cable bracket on transmission - MD730758
*Use a 90 transmission shift lever (The lever that bolts onto the transmission) -- it has a longer lever than a 1991-1994, and the 2G 95-99 versions. Use MD719962.
*Use a 90 transmission shift selector arm (The lever that is installed into the transmission bellhousing and retains the shift selector) -- it is shorter than the 1991-1994, and a different curvature than the 95-99. - MD723865 (89-90.6)
--You will need to use an air hammer with a punch to remove the solid pin that retains the lever on the shaft; OR you will need to disassemble the transmission and swap the shift lever/shaft to a 1990 and use the selector and cage that matches the shift rails internally. If it's a 91.5-94, it will have the later version shift rails, shift selector and cage, so you would need to reuse those with a 1990 shaft/lever.
*Use a matching transfer case to the transmission; which in this case, a 91.5-94 will be a 23-spline tcase from 1991-1996.

If you are intending on not doing anything to the 91-94 transmission internally, then you will need to do:
*Use a 91-94 shift lever assembly in-car
*Use 91-94 shift cables
*Use 1-piece shift cable bracket - MD735585
*Use 91-94 shift cable lever (bolt-on) - MD729750

The 1990 shift cable lever that bolts onto the bellhousing does not have a letter stamped on it. MD719962.
The 1991-1994 shift cable lever that bolts onto the bellhousing has an "H" stamped on it, as well as the shift selector lever. MD729750.

Here's an old link with more information - http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/ho...kets-diff-between-90-91-dsm-vr4-trans.355940/

Amazing! Thanks for that info I definitely did not come across that thread. I have a 94' trans and am picking up a 93' shifter, cables, and bracket on trans. The lever is still on the 94 trans. I am upgrading the transmission to either Jacks stage 3 or trying to send it to Shep.

Shep doesn't do it anymore. Only myself, Jack or Jon@TRE are the main ones. Raif and Boostin still do some as well.

Oh gotcha. The guy who I'm working with on this claims to have a relationship with Shep and I think he was going to ask as a favor, but I don't know. Do you have a site with pricing or do you do it as freelance work? We were trying to order some stuff from Jack's and they didn't have a few items that we have been waiting on for a while now.

Thank you, it has been a long time coming; I will be adding ALOT more stuff to it in the future.

It looks really professional. Whoever is you web design guy is a keeper. I especially enjoyed the "Racecar" section LOL. You can tell a ton of hours and hard work went into it. Really easy to navigate as well.
It was myself and Lofty from here doing everything.

Good work Tim!!! :thumb:

If you needed parts, just email me a list to [email protected]

If you need a rebuild, email me the details and the rest is on the website.

I think we are going to go with you guys for a trans rebuild. I have been kind of disconnected from it, but I have a 90 Eclipse at a shop in Arlington, TX called Alamo Autosports. We were going to do a trans rebuild with some parts from Jack's, but for whatever reason we can't get the parts from them. Long story short I'm tired of messing with it, so we are going to go with you instead.
