Im looking at turbos and came across a quick question i needed answered, this maybe be newbieish but i was currently wondering. Whats the biggest(highest flowing cfm) compressor wheel that can be fit into the TD05H compressor housing? Is it the 20G wheel? Any input would be appreciated.:thumb:
 
The largest compressor wheel that can fit in a TD05H comp cover is a 20g wheel. A 20g TD06H wheel can even be stuffed in there. IMO these type of turbo's with larger wheels in smaller covers tend to suffer from compressor surge, and the efficiency is lost against using a full 20g. IMO these turbo's are best suited for those that need to run a stock appearing turbo but pack a bit more flow. I.E. DSM SO stock appearing class.

Does the inlet of the TD05H compressor enterance have to be milled out so the new wheel will fit in there, or is it a bolt on/balance sort of deal? I think with a 16g turbine wheel and a TD06H compressor wheel that would be one nasty sick turbo with alot of punch. Im asking this cause im gonna need to get my evo 3 rebuilt, so im thinking while its apart why not make it bigger and better? Can the compressor surge kill it over a period of time?
 
Dan's recommendation is something to take seriously. Compressor surge is a common occurrence with these turbos, especially over 25-26 psi. While they're stock appearing, they make tons of heat since there's minimal space between the compressor wheel and the housing. More heat means a hotter intake charge which translates into more knock unless you have higher octane fuel, good tuning skills or methanol injection to fight it off.

You'd be better off with a real 20G. They hit like a ton of bricks and have excellent top end pull. As far as the cover being machined, I'm not sure. You could call SBR or FP and ask them since they sell sleeper versions.
 
Yes, the compressor cover has to be machined presicely and correctly in order to fit a larger wheel. Sure, it will be a nice punch real quick, but will also fall off up top like that of a 16g, etc. Andy's correct with the smaller comp covers making excess heat over a full 3 or 4" cover like the 20g's and other larger turbo's have.

Again, my vote is either keep the evo III as a evo III or just get a whole new turbo. The evo III is a bad ass turbo in its own respects, and some have hit the 400whp mark with it, but its more suited as a 350-370whp turbo easily.
 
I always thought that the TD05H was kinda, you know... the turbine side... Since a TD04 is the 3 bolt design, and I know for a fact that the H discribes the turbine wheel (H is for performance). Stuff like 16g, 14b, and 19c discribe the compressor side. So really the largest compressor wheel you can fit in a TD05H housing would be as irrelivant as how many carrots I can fit in my mouth.
