I'm planning to move up to 600hp from my 400 now, I'm swapping out this jdm engine for a built bottom end, my question, is the OEM harmonic balancer enough or is everyone using the fluidampr one. I dont see it mentioned in build threads.

What happens if your fluidamper freezes in the winter?

My spare is for fabrication of manifolds i was only tossing around the idea of building it and i certianly won't until my current is gone.

I push the car to 7500 mulitpule times per drive, at the track 8500

I havent checked bearings yet but might be this winter for reasons i just stated.

I drive it like a raped ape.

She used to be a daily but shed got abused hard on the streets.

I'm reading fluidampers product description right now. Looks interesting. And I'm not saying anyone is wrong, just that i havnt had an issue with spun bearings or anything and I'm in upper rpms often. Not 9k or anything but still up there

Unless you in weather below -40f you wont have any problems.

Also, even if you drive your car like a "raped ape" im positive you are not shifting every gear at 8k constantly like a on track. The car was a daily driver meaning it spent maybe 80% of its life below 3500rpm. Whether its driving around town or cruising on the highway, it still doenst live the life a a drag motor which spends its time either idling or going wot.

On a separate note, I use the stock belt with no problems. (no aduster/solid mount)

I am in weather that gets -40 LOL but itll be in garage at that point

You dont know how i drive.

I would get a fluidamper if I had to do it over again, and I have an ATI. The ati comes with its own crank sproket and its damper that bolt together. They didn't fit well and required honing to work. The damper also comes off poorly. The outer ring splits from the dampening bands, though they can be put back together without damage. The bolts are a specific torx plus style bit and seem to become damaged easily. You also have to cut the shit out of your timing cover to get it to clear. It is also way more expensive. ATI may be nicer in some peoples eyes, but for all the hassle it took I think that fluidamper is the way to go.

Kyle, they use proprietary silicone in those fluidampers, how is it gonna freeze. Besides have you heard horror stories of stock crank pulleys seperating due to age. You could almost see them wobbeling on some cars. You spent all that money on your motor and turbo already, you can get a harmonic balancre like fluidamper or ati for peace of mind and track approval(if need be). The chance of your oem failing are uncommon and do the job but hey you can always upgrade:D

Well i doubt oem will fail it has 2k miles on it. But I'll consider the flyidamper, i already have an order from STM that hasnt shipped yet :hum:
Im thinking about getting one before the spring build man. My stock one is pretty old, why chance it

The second version that came out was revised to be 10mm instead of 17mm on hub thickness i believe.

Def getting one for my next build. People may say you can get by with stock but the thing is how much longevity are you losing? With builds north of 450whp i think, balanced or not, a good harmonic damper will increase the bottom ends life span.

Cant use a fluidamper in -40f? Well when I get around to building my engine its good to know i'll have to look for different harmonic balancers. It gets around -40f lots here in central Canada and sometimes colder, and being my car will be a year round dd......:aha:

According to Fluidampers website the Silicone fluid in the harmonic balancer is 45,000 times thicker than 30 weight oil, but its properties are unlike oil at all and is sticky. They guarantee it for life, and fluid will never deteroiate. I dont see how sub zero temps will affect operation, its not going to behave like motor oil flowing like molasses at those temps.

You guys talked me into it, fluadampr ordered.
Kyle, thats awesome man. I wanna order mine already :rocks:

Okay so i just got my fluidamper, is it just a slip fit install? Or does it need balancing etc? They came with funky instructions, but since I'm just replacing oem. Even though my rotating assembily has been balanced, this is just a straight up swap with no additional mods correct?

guess i fall under this catagory.

Also got a torque spec sheet. For anyone that wants to know, the 4 m8x1.25 bolts torque to 20ft/lbs

I'll also say this product was probably the most well packed part i have ever received, came in a foam mould

That is one thing they are good at.
The oem damper just comes in a slightly larger box, no packaging. Mine was dented, looked like it had been dropped.

Ordered mine through my dealer account, but since I'm west coast it takes 5 business days :( Oh well, turns out I need to tear the bottom end apart and loosen up the side clearance on the rods before running it so I've got some time to wait.
