1998 Eclipse gst with 6 bolt engine.
I had my timing belt replace 2 weeks ago, and my mechanic says that after he put everything back together, he started it up and heard a noise that he suspected to be the timing belt rubbing on the cover at first. After a little more investigating, he found that the tensioner pulley was locked up and not spinning. So the timing belt was just going around without the pulley spinning. Which seems kind of odd for a piece that is just suppose to spin freely.
He took it apart again and tried spinning the pulley which seemed to be locked into position. He replaced the pulley with the old one that was on there before, and it spins just fine. Put the new one back on and it still wont spin. So after working with it, it finally spins. He put the car back together and took it for a drive. Works just fine. Ive been driving it for 2 weeks now only on the weekends , keeping check on strange noises everytime i start it up and make sure everything i running right. He spoke with a few mitsu tech friends and AMS and no one has ever heard of the pulley locking up. We are both concerned about the long run and thinking about getting another pulley and taking it apart again. ANyone ever come across this problem or any ideas? thanks.
