Ok I have a 95 gst with a 6 bolt swap. I had the car running a couple months ago but it would idle like crap. Turns out that one of the injectors was locked up and the wiring was all messed up. Then tried cranking it one day and the starter just spun. Sounded like it wasnt coming out enough to engage the flywheel. I checked the flywheel and the starter and they were both fine. Puzzled I took it to one of my friends who is amazing with dsms. He did a bunch of wiring and called me and told me it was done. I went down to pick it up and it made that same spinning noise. So he just adjusted the cas and it fired right up. I drove it home and shut it off. Tried cranking it up again and it did that SAME FREE SPOOL NOISE. I called him and he just said that the wiring in the cas was screwy and I needed to replace it. I got a used one and put it on and it keeps doing the same thing. I dont know if im not adjusting it right or what. Im having trouble finding somebody in town to look at it. This has been a project for about a year now and I have only driven it for 30 minutes!! If anybody can help I would appreciate it.

I thought so to, and it may be, but I took it to autozone and they said put it on their little machine and told me it tested good. And I watched the guy fix it within 10 seconds by adjusting the cas. I dont understand how the cas has anything to do with the starter like that. Its like it throws off how far it should come out or something. I did just buy a new starter though so Im gonna slap that on today and see what happens.

What flywheel are you using for the 6bolt? remember if by mistake u put in a AWD flywheel in your FWD yous starter will just spin. Another thing would be the metal cut out sheet that go's between the engine and transmission but if you had the wrong one then it would not line up with the holes on the transmission for the starter. But for sure its now your cas. When that go's bad the engine will crank and not start it wont just free spool like you say.

Well I had it running with the setup that is on it. So the flywheel and everything should work just fine. I drove it and it ran well. Oh and to boosted86, no the car does not turn over it just makes that spinning noise where the starter is not meshing with the flywheel.

it is not the cas. Just go get a new starter and be done with it. Sounds like a starter solenoid to me. Intermittantly engaging....can't see what else would cause that if you say it was working before.

Cheers :)

wow..sorry dude. That is pretty weird.

How does your ring gear look??? pull the lower cover off of the tranny and see if it is still in good shape. Maybe you can tell if the starter is only partially engaging and screwing up the teeth....

I am wondering what starter do u have? 6 bolt or 7 bolt? i had a problem with my starter where the car would barely turn over and then the car spun the starter and made a large grinding noise. i simply replaced the 7 bolt starter and checking my timing and biz screw. turned out it was a mix of the biz screw and a worn starter.

ok I figured out it was because of the starter. Seems that I have to take one bolt out of the starter and turn it down a little bit so that it will reach the flywheel, then tighten it down real good. Maybe its got the wrong flywheel in it?
