Okay, so I looked through a bunch of old post and i really cant find what im looking for......I have a 95 GST with a 6 Bolt swap...Now before i swapped the motor it started and ran just fine. Well today was one of the first days it has stayed warm around here so i went to start the car.....the starter is having an issue, it will try to engage but just sit and spin. Now I used all the 6 bolt flywheel and everything and put the 7 bolt tranny and starter on the car, which i thought was what i was supposed to do. So I pulled the starter took it to advanced and they tested it for me it checked out okay, well when i looked at the gear on the starter the edge of it looked like it had been rubbing something when it was going out to engage.....Has anyone ever had this problem and what the heck is going on???:aha:

:edit: when i say edge i mean the entire Side not just the teeth on the starter

I am having the same problem with my car right now it just sit there and clicks and then about 50 times of trying to start it it finally starts. I swapped the started 3 times and still does the same thing when the starters are in great working condition.

Anyone have any input on this?

Mine doesnt Click The Starter Gear just spins........I was looking at pictures the other day after finally getting a day off, cause i took a bunch of pictures of the original 7 bolt so i could use them for reference and i noticed that the Starter was Shimmed......now i dont understand why it would be shimmed and it wasnt a mild shim it was almost a full inch away from the bellhousing........were there any other Trannys that could be used with the 95 7 bolt motor.....something im missing? I have the next two days off and i may go take some pictures of the way it is now and the way it was before see if anyone can help me out.

Wow...a ten year old thread back from the dead!

Is your car AWD or FWD....it may have something to do with which flywheel you have. The flywheels are different sizes in AWD and FWD cars (106 teeth and 110 teeth, respectively).

Also verify the starter plate used? I believe a 2g starter plate would need to be used with the 2g starter.

I have a 6bolt block, 95 auto tranny (awd). I am using an awd 95 auto starter and the same starter plate. Put a few starters in and the same issue. It's just spinning and not connecting to the torque converter (my assumption since I can't actually see it). Used kiggly kit for the swap. Ipt restalled converter.

Only things I can think of is maybe my starter plate got mixed up and I put back in the fwd starter plate? What are the differences? I'm almost positive this didn't happen. Second thing I thought of is maybe its the wrong torque converter? I'm going to count the teeth tomorrow. Otherwise I am at a loss.

Any way to verify starter plate without pulling engine? All holes lined up, I have dowels in, and the starter is snug to the bell housing.

Maybe the starter isn't getting the voltage needed? A side note is i had to bypass my relay to get it to get power. I may try to connect the starter straight to the positive terminal?

So i took the inspection plate off and I can see the starter and it's coming up short. That said, I also see about the amount it's short in the gap between the (i think) flex plate and the torque converter. Maybe my bolts are too long as I remember torqueing them down correctly. You can see the gap here (I've already backed this bolt out).
