Hey guys, as you all know my motor is out for some maintenance. I was wondering since the motor is out and the oil pan is off, why dont I replace my rod and main bearings now. I wanted to know what this exactly envolves. Is there any motor building procedures I need to do such as measuring clearances, or any special procedures in order to replace them. Or is it simply just getting the bearings and installing them? Thanks in advance.

I'm in the same boat.
got a '90 motor out of the car and on the engine stand. all pistons and rods are pulled. the bearings SEAM fine with no sign of scorching or rubbing. replace?

I like to replace mine anytime im in the motor with the pan off. That doens't mean i replace them all the time, but if the motor is out there's no reason not to really. Get some good ACL race bearings or to save a little cash the ACL or Clevite regular bearings will do just as well.

Simply unbolt the cap, pull the bearing out of the cap, then use the egde of it to push the bearing from teh journal or main rod half and slide teh new ones in with a coat of assembly lube on them.

YOu should emasure the crank just to be sure you don't ahve an undersized (turned) crank that needs a thicker bearing, but if you take one of each with you (rod and main) you shoudl be able to match them up pretty well, 90% of the time you will just need standard size, rarely do you find a used motor that isn't built with a turned crank.
