hey well i just gota re-build and i put in bg synchroshift in at first, and it still felt kinda notchy, i brought it back to the shop, and they told me that there is no way i should have that thick stuff in there and should use 5w30, i dont get it, why should i use this stuff? just cause its thin? can someone help me out here.
 
well im in canada so there aint no great shops here, and it would have costed me an arm and a leg to ship it to the states. they replaced the synchros, bearings, seals, and im sure a few other things i cant think of.
 
Use some non-sythetic gear oil for the first 1000 miles to seat the sychros. They change over to a nice sythetic/blend oil. The sychromesh fluids tend to shift the best in DSMs.
Check the parts stores. See if you can find Pennzoil Sychromesh fluid. Otherwise go to your nearest GM dealer and ask for GM Sychromesh. They're both great shifting fluids.
 
so should i expect for the first little while after the re-build for the shifting not being all so great? not bad, but its not as i expected... i will definetely be puttin some sort of synthetic in again if thats what people agree on. and also, it seems that when the car is cold and im downshifting to first it grinds. what is this from, it only does it for the first few minutes.
 
Motor oil has nothing in it to make synchros work. Gear lubricants designed for transmissions do- they're called friction modifiers, and they allow the synchro brakes to get a grip on the shifting collar and make it work.

I'd stay with the BG if you've already spent the fifty bucks, and just go easy on the shifting until you and the gearbox get used to one another.

I'd definitely NOT use motor oil in a transmission.

It's normal for a properly clearanced rebuilt transmission to be notchy for a while. Grinding/gear blocking is not. Most grinding after a rebuild can be attributed to a poorly adjusted clutch. Where is your clutch dis/engaging at relative to the floor? Did you get a new clutch? If so, what kind?

Yeah, motor oil isn't the best choice.
 
yes i put a new clucth in, act 2100, and i got the flywheel all machined properly and shit, but i had to install washers so that the clutch for would go far enough to engage. i may have to adjust my clutch, i just wanna make sure that the tranny place is not ####ing me, and the main reason why i dont think its my clutch is because it only happens in second gear, and if it were the clutch wouldnt it happen in all gears? i could be wrong. anyway, ive always had a problem with second, and after the re-build i still do, man this sucks ass! :mad:
 
ya the second gear grind LOL looks like you get to learn to shift all over again. my transmission was rebuilt by a dealership with all oem shit and my car does that. i put in shifter aluminum shifter plate bushings brass bushing under the hood for the shifter linkage, and am using redline mt-90 trans fluid. NOTE those things will not fix the problem just make you learn how to shift better because you will get a lot more feel from the tranny. next you ever hear the tale of being able to shift with out a clutch, you are going to learn this method except you will use the clutch when you shift. (i like really matters from 1st to 2nd). step one if you have awd ease from a dead start no dropping clutch with awd unless your an idiot. next what you do is hit the give it a little gas accelerate, then while still in first at about 2700 rpm punch the gas when the car gets to about 3500-4000rpm hit the clutch and pull the shifter back. if you do it right the internals in the transmission will be in what i like to call a state of floating when you do it. takes a while to get used to.

2nd to 3rd to 4th to 5th are all easy to get. push clutch in and shift no special process to get those gears

PS engine oil in transmission will cuase you to need another rebuild really fast in dsm transmissions
