Montreal,
Hi all: i m doing a rebuilt on a talon 92 AWD, after installing the transmission on the block i wasn t able to get into reverse or 5th gear using the rail/gear selectors on the tranny when the car is off. All the other gears are ok. It feels as if something inside the transmission is blocking the movement of the 5th and the reverse position.

Any ideas ?

Thanks

you need the adjust the side to side shifter cables just under the gear shifter.

If you used a 90 tranny in a 91+ OR vise versa you will need to change the tranny shifter cable plate and cables. If not just slightly adjust the cables, it will fix the problem

It could also be that the 36mm endshaft nuts for the input shaft and intermediate shaft are not tightened properly. To check this, you will need to remove the 5th gear end cover and check to see if the 36mm end nuts are first on tight, then be sure to dimple them with a punch at the indentation spots on the shaft once tightened. If they appear worn, or dimpled more than once, I would reccomend replacing them with new ones from Mitsubishi.

You should also check the installation of your reverse switch to see if you have the washer inbetween the tranny case and the reverse switch.

Both of these things will cause you not to shift into 5th or reverse.

It is also smart to see if you have the three spring/ball detents installed correctly in the tranny case.

I had the exact same problem in my 1g. It was simple as the shifter cable bracket. The two bolts holding it in had back out and it wasn't allowing me to go into 5th or reverse.
