Well after searching 10 pages worth of threads on the topic i decided to post.

My car never works... never. After finally getting it to start I brought it back after a 2-3minute drive. At the time every gear was working beautifully. It sat for a week on level ground inside a garage, nodoby even looked at it.

I started it up today and it seems 5th and reverse just don't go in. They physically don't go in even with considerable force. 1-4 work perfectly. I know some people will suggest adjusting the shifter cables. I removed the selector rod and the reverse/5th gears don't even go in manually. The car was off at this time. From what i have read i think i should pull off the outer tranny cover and check stuff out.

The car is a 6-bolt 1g with a 2G tranny. The tranny setup was put together by the PO and hasn't given me any problems while i've owned it.

Any suggestions at all would help. Thanks in advance.

Edit: I've tried putting the car into 1st and then switching to reverse and it didn't work. The car was at idle revs when i attempted to put reverse in. Reverse doesn't go in even when the car is off.

pulling off the outer cover may be helpful but the problem is probably further in. disassembly of the tranny will most likely be needed.

What do you think could be faulty inside there?

Thanks for the help! :thumb:

5th and reverse work off the same fork shaft. two forks on one shifting shaft. if something is binding together one one of the forks the other gear will also be froze. it could be numbers of things. the only real way to know is to disassemble. wish you were closer i could fix it in minutes. i have rebuild three 2g trannys as of now.

Please do elaborate, i have tools and would love to be able to fix this without spending much money. You are right. One of the the threads i read, some guy was having the exact same problem as me. His 5th gear even grinded in like mine did when it was working. He opened up the outer cover and found the gears jammed together or something.

Please do suggest any of the fixes you know of, i'm quite sure i can make an attempt to fix it. . :thumb: :thumb:

ok pull of the outer cover if you do this while its in the car a synchro ring will most likely fall out. you will see a shift fork there. it is for fifth gear. it will have a pin in it that hold it to the shaft. take a hammer and punch to drive it out then the fork and slip ring, wich is what locks the input shaft into the gear. if it will move back and forwared fifth gear and its fork is not the problem and you now need to pull the tranny. after you do this let me know and i will tell you more to do
