hey guys. im having a problem and ive searched but cant really get some solid answers. my car 97 gst goes into 5th and reverse when ever it wants too. maybe with a little force when it does go in.
any suggestions?

Most likely the shift linkage/cables.
Your synchros may also be going bad too. Same thing happened to my trans.

Just look at it. You'll know if they're bad.
Make sure the cotter pins are intact and the bushings are in the right spot.
And check to see if the cables themselves are worn. My trans made the cables kink and rip the boot on there and I went through two pairs before I got my trans looked at.

Check the bushings on the shift lever. Just pull up the leather boot, and have a look. There are two plastic bushings that go bad. Mines the same way, I used some copper type bushings but they really don't work well. It does shift but its only a temp fix.

If you're going for the cheapest solution first, I'd suggest changing the tranny fluid to some Redline. I'm running 2/3 MT90 with 1/3 MTL.

ok will do thanks guys
lets say the shift linkage/cables are out of plave how do i put them back?
Sorry if i sound dumb i just dont want to mess anything up

It depends what's wrong. I mean if a bushing is falling off look at the condition of it, if it's good, slide it back on, bad, then replace it.

Let us know what looks wrong

Yeah, there should be a how-to on that skateboard bearing install and I heard it drastically improves shift feel.
If not all you do is press in 2 bearings for each shifter, then slide it on, then put in the cotter pin.

I'll be doing this for my new trans too.

ok i will tomorow. its dark outside right now and i have no form of light haha
i will change the tranny oil too. And will Skateboard bearings help in any way even if its not the problem?

I'd like to see that link as well if someone has one. However the bushings I'm talking about are on the shifter knob shaft itself. I'll look for a pic.

these are the bushings I'm talking about, mine were worn so bad it was almost impossible to shift.

....I love the auto merge function BTW! LOL

I did the skateboard bearings and noticed such a huge difference. I would def recommend the upgrade. You can find them on ebay for $5 bucks. Go for it and you wont be sorry.

okay guys so i looked under the hood onto the tranny and everything looks normal nothings out of place or torn. The bushings still have the pins so that only leaves to check the bushings on the shift lever or change the tranny oil or the synchros are going bad (hope not) :banghead:
Lets say the bushings on the shifter lever are torm or bad does anyone sell a kit to replace them or "upgrade them" ? Or what can be a temp fix?
Im also going to change the tranny oil ASAP what would you guys recomend?
DD babied most of the time no hard shifting and basically stock dsm
im leaning towards synchromesh :hmm:

if the bushings are bad would this work

Change out those bushings with the skateboard bearings, or just go to the junkyard and get some used ones. Or contact shep or jacks for new bushings.

And I said above to use the Redline MTL/MT90 tranny fluid.
And I'm at school now but when I get home Jack gave me a reason why not to use Synchromesh, but it's on my warranty paper so I'll get you that reason in a couple hours.

And don't buy that Autozone garbage.

Another recommended fluid is the 2005 Evo MR 6-speed Gear Oil. It's expensive but a really good mix. It's also pricy though, so I went out and bought Redline

So, there was no play in the cables. Pull the shift boot up,a dn have a look at the shifter plate. Nobody sells a kit for that bushing. Your on your own besides the stealership. Did you even look at the link I posted? Thats what you probably need, my shifter was the same way until I replaced them.

OK guys i just finished looking under the center counsel and everything is where it should be and tight.
What would be my next step?
I was looking at the mechanism that changes the gears on the tranny(dont know the name) and it looks like something isnt right. lt Does anyone have a picture of how it looks ? Or how it works?

Also when i try to get into 5th the first couple times it goes to 3rd but lets say i try a little harder it gets into 5th and runs perfect.:ohdamn:
Reverse is more of a pain it goes into 4th :banghead: WHen it does go in its like grinding like if the clutch was not put in.

IM LOST! HELP!

I would go under the hood, and take the cables off, and see if they are out of adjustment. in neutral when you take the cables off the lever arms on the transmission should stay centered. both of them.

um... ok, imagine there are two ways your shifter moves. up, and down (like 1st, to 2nd gear) and sideways (like moving the gear shifter back, and forth in neutral. Have someone get in the car, and do this, moving the shifter. This way you can see which way moving the shifter will move the levers. When I say neutral, the levers should be in their centered positions.
