5 speed non turbo help

Just recently finished a A/T swap to M/T and i do not have reverse. Maybe 5th either, I haven't gotten to drive it because i put it all back together and blew the engine, friend of mine didn't tighten the flexplate bolts down But, I have a new engine for it and its already installed, just need the timing done(be done tomorrow) i am still stuck as to how i don't have reverse...I'm praying i don't need a new transmission, I put it in what appears to be reverse but moves fwd almost as if its in 4th...It doesn't stay in the position it should for reverse either...My linkages are ok...the mainlinkage on the tranny was sliced(bushing to tranny linkage) and i repaired it for the time being. Still nothing...This is throwing me a curve ball and id rather not have the shop take a look at it as they will probably tell me ill need a transmission or just rack up labor costs for somthing i could possibly do myself! I've got plenty of experience and just need a little help here...Would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I would get a friend and disconnect the cables from the shift link and move the linkage by hand to see if you can get it into each gear. That way you can rule out anything with the cables or shifter. That is where I would start.

Try adjusting the left to right movement shifter cable.
