Trying to trouble shoot this car, appears I can get 1st and reverse. Shifter linkage is all hooked up and not changed since last driving. Under the hood the cable towards the passenger side clicks into 3 positions, drivers most cable moves forwards and back only, no clicks. Is this normal operation for the cables? Only thing I can come up with is that I lost a shift fork or one of the cables broke internally.

Clutch works fine.

Found the issue, the bracket holding the cables lost both bolts, time for loctite.

Congrats on finding your problem. I was gonna suggest checking you linkage bolts again.

Normally one would lose 1-2, 3-4, or 5-R if something inside the transmission broke.

I thought the jamb nuts backed off on the shifter, when those were ok I was like DOH. Anyways he was complaining about it being hard to shift once in awhile(father in laws car). Looks like the bolts came loose then rounded out the holes so it was hanging by a thread for some time. $1.50 in bolts to fix. He has 3 more AAA tows left, silly man left the house without his cell and had to walk 3 miles to a house this time!
