McGregor,
I was just wondering if maybe you could be able to point me in the right direction looking for resources to swap a 4g63 evo engine in my 96 spyder gs?

I picked up a trans from a 97 eclipse gst....5 speed manual and a "jdm evo 1-3 engine" w/the yellow 510cc injectors. I didn't get an ecu with it though so I'm certain I need a turbo ecu but not sure whether to get just a 97-99 ecu, or if I have to get an evo ecu as well?

I've looked around some and saw that the engine wiring from 97 to 96 is different but couldn't find out more details... I've also read about just putting a turbo on the 4g64 but I've decided to go with this setup right now and am looking what I have to do to make this work.

as far as I know all the mounts are good and everything will bolt in fine, I'll have to replace the exhaust system. I'm stuck on engine ecu choice, and wiring mods that I'll need. the only numbers I've got off the engine so far are from the front that reads " 4G63" then directly underneath of that says RR3904. on a sticker on the rear of the block says RR3904y9

If you could help me out in any way that would be great...thanks guys:thumb:

You can put the evo engine in your car if you want... or you can turbo your 4g64 and put the evo head, intake, exhaust, all on it.

MANY different write ups about this.

I would do what's recomended above, doing the 2.0 head on the 2.4 block and boosting. However if you do decide you want pure 4g63 make sure it is not an evo8 or 9 engine you get, that will not work.

ok, thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll bare that in mind as I get into this project...

so far I'm at a loss at what to do for an ecu to this evo 3 engine with a td05H-16g...

will a 97-99 gst ecu be the route to go or will an evo 3 ecu be ideal...and will it work/what mods do I need to do?

thanks again

My first instinct would say go with a turbo eclipse ECU, particularly a 95 eprom ECU. I don't know how many pinouts (if any) would change if you used the Evo 3 ECU, but I'd expect that a DSM ECU would be pretty much plug and play for a DSM chassis. Maybe one of the ECU gurus can chime in to verify the pinouts for you. You'll have to wire the knock sensor to the ECU for sure either way since your N/T chassis won't likely have the wiring already in the harness.

i've come across some threads about swapping an evo 8 ecu in.....since I already have an evo 3 motor....would my best bet be to go with the 8 ecu while I'm at it...or stick with a 98 eclipse gst ecu for ease of installation???

ok, so it took a little bit but I found a 95 eprom ecu to work with....with future intentions of going with DSMLINK...and a new wiring harness to replace the cut one from the evo motor.

I intend on ripping this motor down a bit to make sure it's not due for a rebuild, and to replace gaskets that may leak...but how would I be able to tell if the internals are nearing their end? I'm not really mr.rich here so I don't want to rebuild it if everything's ok, but I also don't want to drop it in just to have it rebuilt in a month or two. Could you guys help me with what to look for in regards to internal conditions? Thanks again!

WOW! The whole gathering parts process had taken a little while but finally the swap began in the middle of last week. I ended up getting laid off and finally the time seemed right to "git er done"

so I've swapped in the evo III 4G63t removing the 4G64...heres the list of what i did and it's such an improvement I can hardly believe it!

swapped in the turbo tranny at the same time with gst drive shafts
gst exhaust downpipe
wired up a 95 eprom ecu as follows
swapped 1 to 14 and 2 to 1 and 15 to 2 and 14 to 15 injector wires @ the ecu
new knock sensor @ pin 78
new ignition wire @ pin 82 tapped from fuel pump relay
1g CAS installed and wired as per magnus motorsports site
1g resistor pack wired in
switched the spark plug wires
wired in the 2g ISC plug
2g alternator
fuse box relocated to beneath air intake vertically mounted
1g TB swap
Vacuum line elimination (EGR removal)
Aeromotive AFPR install
1g coolant bottle swap
walbro 255 lph fuel pump swap (yes, it's loud....is a 190 just as loud???
fuel pump rewired w relay
injen intake
stock SMIC installed and fabricated to a J-Pipe for future FMIC

I'll post up some pics in a couple days once I get things settled in...evo III runs so smooth and sounds great! is there anyway I can get out of lean w/o a S-AFC???? or would I have to drop my 510 injectors to the blue 450s w/o one??? thanks for all the help and reference material! DSMtuners rocks!!!

Have you looked into get DSMLink/ECMLink now? Or maybe getting it chipped?

Well i've been considering different options for tuning the air/fuel and turbo boost timers...

wouldn't dsm link take care of all those options though? cause between a turbo timer and safc would cost me the same to get dsm link anyways, and dsm link is way more worth it right?
