My brother struck me with the exceptional idea of making an Ariel Atom, using my car for mostly everything.
A guy he works with agreed to pay for the chassis and welding and rough estimates are totaling around 8 grand.

I know most of you will have your doubts, but anything is possible in custom fabrication. A 17-18 year old kid built an Atom for 11gs (type in "DIY Ariel Atom at google it's the 1st link.)

I'm almost thinking of just donating my parts/entire car to the operation just so i can drive it on a regular basis.

At this point it's just talk, but extremely possible. With the E316G - the power will be downright insanely fast and probably have traction problems unless we run really wide track tires. Another concern is using my AWD transmission with a VCE, but that really shouldn't be too big of a problem since it'll only be driving the two rear wheels anyway.

Just thought I'd tease you guys with the thought.:aha:

Open to ideas, suggestions, thoughts, etc.

yea we thought about this at my shop, it could cost under a grand for the frame, we were thinking of getting a honda civic from a junkyard as a donor and base and then order any parts we need from the dealer. then later on down the line you could swap in any engine or whatever

That would be sweet. I'd rather stick with an aluminum block motor just so the chassis performs as it's intended. It would still be a rocket though. I don't see how it could be done cheap.

I don't know if you've ever seen this guys stuff, but it's my fave Atom. Check out his DP1 car too. Badass stuff!

I would pick a different drivetrain altogether. The 4G63 with it's iron block would be to heavy for a rear engine/rear drive car. It would be a powerhouse but it wouldn't be much of a handler, can we say Wheelies? The weight ratio would be way off unless you managed to weigh down the front some how. If sticking with the 4G63 then I would definitely switch over to a 2wd transmission just to do it right.

I have thought of doing this myself as well, but haven't lighted on power source yet. I think if you can figure out a way to get our rather heavy engine in there with all the power and still have it be a handling monster it would be beyond sick!

That DPCars sight is awesome. Did you check out the Hyabusa based V8. 250+ horsepower and the complete motor is around 170lbs... That would be insane... now if only they weren't $30k each.

I was thinking about this after posting last night, as long as the rear wheel center was after the motor then you would probably be just fine. The handling still wouldn't be as good as it could be but if you ran e85 and had an efficient tune then you could have 400hp in a 1500lb car. Dangerous... yes, crazy... yes, badass cool... HELL YES!

how much do our engines and tranny weight together?

I know my longblock weighed 225lbs, AWD trans weighed in at 130lbs.

These are just shipping weights though, add in everything else and your looking at an additional 100lbs total at least.

I think the transfercase alone is 40lbs.

I'm still working on trying to sell my car, I thought parting it out would be cake, but no one wants to buy either the motor or shep trans. Damn you economy!

ah so everything in the engine bay weighs in at what 700 pounds, thats what my uncle said it should be
