Just recently came into a 98 spyder gs for a price I couldn't pass on and has become my new project. The motor knocks and I was thinking about replacing it with the one I was rebuilding for my 95 GSX.

My question is can I swap my '63t motor in with the NA trans and drive it until I'm ready to finish the AWD swap? And will my GSX harness play nice with the fwd NA trans? I can pull anything off the GSX if I have to

I've never owned a spyder but I was always under the impression that they all have a 4g64 in them not a 420a. If this is the case which I am 99% positive it is the 4g63 will bolt right in.

Edit: ^^^ that's what I thought.

I don't have a 420a engine, the car is a 98 Spyder (4g64 engine). It has the same engine orientation as a gs-t and gsx

Damnit, good call. Totally forgot the spyders had the 4g64 engines.

As far as using the NA trans with the 63, I really dont know so I cant help.. Im sorry!

The transmission should bolt right up since both block are essentially the same. I just wouldn't count on it holding up to much power.

People giving completely incorrect advice never ceases to amaze me LOL. You are correct ALL na spyders have the 64, and the 63 will drop right in. My buddy had the only one I've seen first hand, I know it's done all the time there's just not many dsms around here, he said he left his stock tranny in and it worked fine until he did his awd swap 3 months later. Sorry I couldn't give more advice, but like I said this misinformation was killing me LOL.

I believe the tranny would hold up just as well as one in the gst. Hell, i think they are identical. Half shafts MIGHT be slightly different.

I know they are geared differently then the gst tranny, but I think that's the only difference. And fwd don't have half shafts ;) LOL.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm not worried about the trans taking too much abuse, I'm leaving my stock t25 on there until I can get everything else together for my bigger turbo and awd swap. I just want to get it drivable (sp) so I can sell my dd (95 talon fwd) for the next couple months

Lol, ive always called the driveshafts on front wheel drives "half shafts". Whats the proper term for them?

Spyder tranny gears are different than that off a gst tranny. I know it will run just fine, just won't tolerate as much power as a turbo tranny would. Since you will be running it for a short time with the t25, you should be ok. You might even like it's gears better than the turbo one LOL.

Whatever we are calling them, driveshafts, halfshafts, axles, they are a smaller diameter at the differential in the NA Spyder than those in the FWD turbo models.

Yes the 4g63t will fit and so will the trans the stock clutch will not hold past 200ft/lbs of torque most likely.

No you don't need to modify anything like the mounts its literally drop in.

The trans in good condition will hold fine up to 300ft/lbs of torque or more, if its a auto your even better off because its the same as the turbo trans.

Just be sure to swap the engine harness/dash harness unless you follow this guide i reposted on this this site, http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-tuning-ecu/424084-turbo-ecu-spyder-gs.html.

Yes the Gear ratios are different you won't notice it on the speedometer though, http://www.vfaq.com/mods/Trannies.html

Thanks alot for the info :thumb: they're both autos, so changing everything over from the gsx to the spyder shouldn't be too bad.
