Ive got a huge phantom knock issue, whenever i give the car any gas or simply put load on it, the knock count shoots up to 43. The only thing i did that caused this was change oil from 10-30 to 20-50.

20w/50 good lord, is that gear oil? LOL

do you hear an audible knock like rod knock?

how's the 02's when this happens?

it sounds like you're extremely lean or have entirely too much timing

a log would help
 
agreed! I use to use a 20/50 in my old 6 cyl chevy, but the dsm does not really like a thick oil like that. the 'common' lifter tick will get DRAMATICALLY (sp?) worse. when i first got my car i tried the same for one oil change and i will never do that again. did not hurt anything (of course the car was practically new (less than 3 months old). i would not recomend using a 20/50 oil in this car.

Ok, i will definately switch back to 10w-30 and see if it makes a difference.
 
service manual calls for 15-40 doesn't it? I use 20-50 castrol gtx, and i get lifter tick with any other oil with any type of weight except for 2050. Every car is different, if it worked with the old oil, dont change it. I mean, change your oil, just dont change brands. Oh, and Engine Restore is the shit. I use it every oil change and lifter tick has never come back.
 
Well my car has phantom knock although think it should be renamed random knock and its off idle when it hits those high counts.And for sure isn't detonating..no way 7.5 compression can detonate off boost on 91 octane.My personal guess is the original lifters are doing it.I put in new knock sensor and no help and tried other ideas on this board like pcv delete,fuel solenoid bypass,double checked timing..etc.Weird thing is it is random,sometimes I get it and sometimes not and not just when engine is cold although have seen it do that when cold and you rev it again making me think its lifters.I have new lifters to install and that should wipe it out.One sure way is to do it with code in a custom chip or engine management system.I have a new eprom ecu and chip but my eprom ecu seems to not be working right so haven't been able to try it out yet.

My bet is lifters.And doubt oil wil help although maybe the thicker oil don't go thru the lifters fast enough and they tick more thus more knock.Its a theory.. :)
 
I believe you're on the right track. No way in hell you would have a repeated 43 knock count from real detonation. Not and still have all 4 pistons in one piece with out a hole in the center!

This has been my theory for a while now after going through lots of high counts of knock, and no damage/no reaon for it.
 
timing would make sense and all but when the ECU sees the knock it pulls the timing to 10* which is the lowest it can go, and it still has 43 counts of knock.
 
I had the same problem with my car...Check your Base timing..then check for anything rattling in the engine bay and Exhaust leaks! All of those will trigger your knock sensor to go ape shit..barely under load mine was at 43 counts...but when i kept on it...it slowly went down..I know it was P/K...Try those things..like everyone has been saying...dan
