I have a 95 gs. My speed sensor went out and my transmission was bad So I swapped out the tranmission from a 2004 pt cruiser which came with a VSS for said pt cruiser. My speedometer reads double the actual speed now(If im going 50 it will say 100-105) So I assume its a incompatibility with the vss. Now I have already swapped my plug for the VSS to the newer style 97-99 since thats what the pt cruiser was. My question is: Can I install a 420a 97-99 VSS and get accurate speed readouts or do I NEED to go back to 95-96 style?

The original vss was already bad. Then my original trans went out. I would have loved to keep the original vss but it wouldnt work. Currently using my 04 trans but the speedometer is just double(so it odometer

I have the same issue here, I'll be following, but a little worried that its a nearly dead thread so far without any leads. My 2G is a 95, and a few years ago my buddy had me change out his manual trans for one out of a 97. I recently bought the car from him and I want to make everything right on it. The speedometer reads double the actual speed just like the OPs. Im sure its something to do with the signal output of the VSS from the 95-96 vs 97 and newer + PT Cruiser VSSs. Im still searching around the forums for answers. Hope to see this getting some ideas or fingers pointed in new directions.
