This is dumb really.. You say all you want is 650 and the 5 speed when maintained will easily hold that.. I see stage 1 TRE's handle 600hp... Stock trannys hold a ton of power to.. I don't think the tranny is to blame on this one.. I think its the driver mod...

im trying to make a viable option for a much stronger trans then the weak crap that came out of the factory for our precious dsm's

The W5MG1 and W6MG1 transmissions are stronger but not a lot stronger than the W5M3. Neither will stand up to abuse which seems to be the biggest cause of W5M3 failure.

I'm sure Jack or Shep know exactly which parts of the W5M3 are the weak link. Talk to them about getting stronger parts made if you ever really reach the point of needing them.

There are hardly enough 3S TT transmissions ever made to make them a viable swap and getting parts to maintain the ones that were a constant challenge. They are the primary weak link in a 3S.

The 5 speed 25 spline getrags are tanks. The 6 speeds have a problem with the bell housing at high power levels. The only problem with the 5 speeds is the transfer case and output shaft. I have never seen a getrag 5, or 6 speed shear the gears like a dsm will. The weak link in a 3s is that they weigh almost 4,000 pounds. I've had a few of both, i love the lightness and price of mods for dsm cars, and on the 3s cars i love the long ratio's, and toughness of the transmission, along with cruising 80 mph at less than 2500 rpm's. If a bellhousing for mounting a w5/6mg1 to a 4g63 was available, i would buy one. But for now, it's way cheaper to keep buying 3rd, 4th, and intermediate shafts for my dsm transmissions from time to time. A member of this forum with a vrey high power car has been through 17+ dsm transmissions.

Donnie, I don't disagree. Having owned several myself I'm not interested in seeing additional demand for the transmissions and add that the synchros are not as robust as one would like.

It's a pain breaking 3 and 4 but it's something, IMNSHO, that 99% of the members here will never run into.

its not like i have anything better to do

how about getting a jobby???:applause:

Hey, I need one too,LOL:ohdamn:

P.S, mommy says hi...WTF

I was under my friends 92 base modle stealth 2 days ago and was woundering the same thing. I know the base model is differnt. But I began to think to myself I wounder if the bell housing on the 4g63 transmission would bolt up to the 6g72 transmission. Or if you have to get a coustom made bell housing. Looks like the paenger side trans mount would bolt right up. also noticed on the 92 that this swap might only work on a 1g b/c the engine mounts are on the block not the transmission. But if a 2g bell housing bolts up that would be a differnt story.

Trust me, I put a 3S engine and trans in a GVR4 and it was stupid.

Jack

You're now the second member on here to lay claim to that with no proof. Calling your bluff. Post pics.

First you need to make 650HP, then you need to break the tranny. When that happens, then you can think about what needs to be done. Plenty of people push big hp through the upgraded dms trans.:p

ps - let me know if you want me to stop by and give you a taste the hx35 on the hwy.

I want to... Got any spare hx35's ;)?

Id like to add some input for the Getrag gearbox.

The trans itself holds an insane amount of power, but the weak link is in the transfer case and output shaft. 3sx.com has 300m output shafts and upgraded xcase housing or braces to make sure it doesnt explode when you rip it.

In a 5spd, 2nd gear does 80 mph, and has a higher acceleration feeling, but in a 6 spd 2nd will do 70-75 and top out at nearly 200 in 6th.

All 91-92 (pre december build date) will have 18 spline output shafts and pretty much cant handle over 400hp without breaking things. Late 92-99 are all 25 spline, with stronger bellhousings.

Its ALWAYS(up to a certaint point) the driver, either they DUMP the clutch, or they BANG gears. I have a buddy with a EVO XI MR with very little mods, he hasnt even driven it for 10k miles, an has gone through TWO t-cases and one tranny.

so i still havent herd anyone suggest a better awd gearbox to try.

There is none, other than a built th400, a "built" DSM tranny is as good as its gonna get.

This is what I've heard countless times by guys who push the 3S cars. . . This makes sense. The 3S platform is HEAVY! Mitsu would foolish not to beaf up the gears. As much as lightening your car helps your tranny, so does a tranny built from the factory intended to haul more weight.

Why not figure out better, streetable solutions to the problems with the DSM transmission so we can all benefit? There were 15,000 VR-4's built and 10,000 stealth R/T turbos. That's 25,000 transmissions, of which 17,000 are the 91/92 with the weaker trans.
Stealth 316 - Stealth/3000GT Production Guide
How many of those do you think have been ruined?

When I first heard this I thought "the last transmission you'll ever need" but, what are the odds of finding one?

There are very few other options. Most other AWD sysems are a longitudinal design like subaru and audi. Chrysler has a getrag setup in it's A555 and A565 and the Tcase from the caravan awd system can be adapted.

Basically, DSM awd junkies are stuck with what we got. Unless you want to start making your own gearboxes with known stupid strong FWD gearbox setups. If you're casting your own bellhousings, you are not that far away from an extra shaft and a whole transmission.

You could also work on a torque limiting system. That's why fwd's live under huge power, they have a "fuse" in the tires, so to speak. As soon as you're making enough torque to break the tranny, you're spinning the tires.

No intent to offend with this exxpression of POV at all but here goes. . . So we should NOT take advantage of a good tranny becasue it's too hard to find? What if we find one? Do we just not jump on it because the community cant do the same? I'll take what I can get. . . BTW, no one try this. They suck and I havn't gotten mine yet :D

I love this community. And you all know I do. I'm here ALL_THE_TIME. But it's rediculous to shoot down an option because it's rare. If it works and it is successful (with the gear ratios being different), then I say have at it. It's hard to find a good evo tranny (upgrade with different gear ratios) just as well. Or the specific 1991-1992 (KW5M332NPXV) with stronger 3rd and 4th assemblies. . . which are the assemblies we break.....

i actually came across a six speed on ebay. it was buyit now for about 2500 bucks. im looking for one cheap. i dont care if the sincros ar bad or not. as long as it will atleast drive in 1st gear. if it ends up working. then i will pay more. but im not going to pay 2grand+ for something that im not positive will work.
so im looking for a cheap one for now.
the one i found on ebay was a completely stock rebuilt unit. thats what the company does i guess.

They hold pretty well. But i say dont try to lauch the hell out of a stock 6 speed Getrag. My buddy has Evo3 16g's on his VR-4 and lets just say he has mutilated a couple of those. He actually just got done tearing up another, and this one was pretty built: Billet clutch forks and such.

Two 400whp turbos with 800lb+ more weight than a full weight dsm will do that :). That's still an apples to oranges comparison. What would that tranny do with 600whp in a 3000lb car?

I think that it would almost be worth it just for the 6speed for the ratios. and they are stronger.
