while this zombie thread is around for a bit, how about an entire 3g rear subframe swap on a 2gfwd? read before that it fits... i have a 3g GTS rear end available to me. i think im gonna try it out!

From what i read their are zero differences, they are the same crappy stamp multi layer steel and not stronger,

Made a thread on this a while back. Put an extra 2G rear subframe I had into my buddies 3G eclipse that had taken a hit. Only difference is the larger sway bar and sway bar mounting location. All other mounting dimensions are the same. And as detailed in this thread the 3G cars use nicer control arms with the same geometry.

Bad picture but smashed 3G subframe is on the bottom 2G subframe on top. As you can see the subframe construction is an identical stamping so no upgrade too it. But it will bolt right up if you need a subframe for your 2G and can find a 3G parts car cheap.

will the FWD exhaust clear the 3g rear subframe the same as a 2g (thermal exhaust)? arent the roll bearing bushings better for body flex as opposed to the 2g stamped style bushings?

Not sure what you mean by roll/stamped bushings. The arms use the same style rubber bushings on both 2g and 3g. Most people replace them with poly bushings for better performance. As far as clearance for exhaust and such I'll repeat. The FWD 3g subframe stamping is IDENTICAL to the 2g stamping except for the sway bar mounting locations.

That means everything fits the 3g subframe exactly the same as the 2g subframe except for the sway bar bushing clamps. There is NO performance upgrade in using a 3g subframe in a 2g. The only reason to use one would be if you cannot locate a 2g fwd subframe and need one for replacement or if you are putting in the bigger 3g sway bar and dont want too slot the bushing clamps like the others in this thread did.

i read in a seperate forum about "toe arm" bushings:

"The inner toe arm bushing on a 2g Eclipse and 3g Eclipse 4 cyl is a “simple bushing.” Basically a very hard piece of rubber with a steel sleeve through the center. The 3g Eclipse 6 cyl uses an actual swiveling joint. It’s similar to a ball joint in the way it can move. It has a much greater range of movement than a simple bushing. There is also no flex in this joint like you would find with a rubber bushing. It’s very rigid, hence no need for an after market bushing..."

Ah the toe arms. Completely forgot about those. I did mention that in my thread I made about the 3G subframe a year ago. Found it here.

So, yes that is true they do have a spherical instead of a bushing on the 3g. And that does make it a slight upgrade. Up too you if its worth swapping the entire subframe for that or just getting spherical toe arms for your 2g subframe.
