$300 a good price for a used real mitsubishi big 16g clipped and ported?

My buddy is trying to figure out a good price to sell his turbo. He is selling a mitsubishi big 16g turbo its ported and clipped with oil feed line its the real deal for $325 is that too much or a good price? It has zero in and out play but side to side play but im sure it will be fine once u add oil in it and the turbo blades are perfect its been seeing most 22lbs of boost what do u guys think?

I think people that clip Big 16G's to run them at 22psi are wasting their money.

Aside from that, if you're sure the turbo came from a running car, it's probably worth the price.

Sounds like a decent price. How many miles are on the turbo?
Rule #1- mileage doesn't matter. There's no set mileage at which a turbo fails....but a dirty oil supply will bring your turbo to a screeching halt in a few short miles.
 
Clipping has nothing to do with the amount of boost a turbo can generate overall- it has more to do with the amount of airflow the turbine can generate when you pair a large compressor to a small turbine. However, a Big 16G compressor cannot possibly produce more airflow than a TD05H turbine can flow on a 2.0L engine...so unless you're running a stroker or have 11.0:1 pistons with far more exhaust energy than a stock engine, the clip is a complete waste of resources.

I was telling him to sell it for like $350 or $375 i mean he paid over $600 for it since its ported and clipped i dunno $300 seems cheap to me.
 
A short time ago FP Had brand new Evo III 16G's on sale for $499, so I don't think his price is too cheap considering a brand new turbo with more potential from a newer-design compressor wheel can be had for not much more.
 
Agreed, 16G market price new is pretty much $499 since they're 'on sale' so often, and clipping isn't going to change the used value much/any.

Agree totally, and have you all noticed that more and more eBay turbos are coming with no water jacket??? Have they forgotten turbocharging 101?

Eh, the last handful of Mitsu turbos I've installed on 2G's for customers were done so without water. The main benefit is the ease of installation and the serviceability in the event of a problem. As long as you're running the oil supply from the filter housing to get the coolest oil (with a restrictor in place to protect the turbo from too much volume) and the car is turbo-timed, there's literally no possible negative effect. It would be the same criteria as if you were running any of the T3-based Garretts with a dry bearing cartridge.

How much play is acceptable with these mitsubishi big 16s? Is this true turbo's will have side to side shaft play if theres no oil in the housing so it has room to move a little? Does that apply to a used turbo like one that has been on a car and removed?

As long as the turbine doesn not touch the housing, and doesn't smoke, it isn't blown quite yet.But it's on its way out if it moves alot...But Justin can rebuild it for you for pretty cheap if that's the turbo your going to stick with..

one of the bolts is stuck in the turbo housing that connects to the o2 but besides that no smoke at all when it was on the car.
