Hey guys just got my logger and pluged it in the car. Used MMCD to log and noticed im getting ALOT of knock.

I was sitting in the garage revving the engine and seeing 40ish~ knock on my palm.

I do have alot of lifter tick... would this cause high knock ?
Boost leak cause knock?
exhaust leak ?

Setup:

1993 Talon TSI
6 Bolt engine
255 lhp rewired
2g MAF
14B
550 Lucas injectors ( brand new )
boost set to 17PSI
3" turbo back exhaust. ( pretty sure theres a leak at the flex )
91 Octane gas

SAFC on the way.

now is this phantom knock ? real knock ?

for timing the palm says 5 so think thats right unless its not same timing everyone says to check.

I'll bet if you take your knock sensor out and look at it you'll see that all the black insulation in the back has oozed out.

I have heard bad lifter tick can cause that especially sine you are free revving the car and getting super high counts.

+1 with checking the condition of the knock sensor. Do you have the revised lifters installed or no?

nope do not have revised lifters. ... well im pretty sure i dont cause i have lifter tick. Thought the revised didnt tick.

I have a major lifter tick right now, I had to adjust my knock sensor in ECMlink to read only above 4000 rpm currently because I know that the knock is coming from the lifter. You lifters can send knocking vibration to your sensor.

its a pain dealing with phantom knock. I agree with the guys above, check you sensor, then check you lifters. That should resolve the problem.

so you guys saying i should check what my knock @ 4000rpm and if its good dont worry about the knock below 4k rpm ?

if i put 3g lifters does it guarentee no more lifter tick ?

Ill check the sensor what do i check for tho? is there a way to see if its bad?

3g lifters wont tick. If there is black goo coming out of your knock sensor, it is time to replace.

No, the other guy was stating his experience that on HIS car any knock below 4k was caused by his lifters.

At idle/free rev if you have knock, it's from the lifters. After that you won't know whether it's phantom knock or real knock until you are deducing your problem in those RPM ranges.

So what steps do I go thru ?

All i have is a SAFC...

Replace lifters...
check knock sensor and replace it possibly?

what else can I do ?

Octane boost?

Check your base timing. The ecu assumes its at 5 degrees , but that doesnt mean thats what it is really at. Grab a timing light and check to make sure it is set correctly.

yea sorry for not clarifying that. I knew the problem was my lifter in my car, you should always be keeping track of your knock counts no matter what.

You really shouldn't have knock until you hit boost.

I also think that your stock intercooler should be fine at those levels. Maybe you intake system needs a cleaning. You intercooler could have a thin film of oil, not allowing it to dissipate heat as well.

I personally stay away from mechanic in a can, or any of those things.

Hey man, check your knock sensor first....here is what mine looked like, and then what it is supposed to look like brand new:

hey guys do all 1g stock lifters tick after a while?

I have 1g lifters from an old that didnt tick.

Would it be dumb to put those in ? would they eventually tick ?

They don't "always" tick....when they tick it is because they are gummed up and need cleaned out. You can clean them and they shouldn't tick for a while. The oiling port just isn't big enough in them, which is why you go with the revised lifters.

Why don't you just replace the knock sensor? It's way easier, less time consuming, and should take care of your phantom knock.

let me know how it goes i have a similar problem but i have a brand new knock sensor. i dont think i have lifter tick atleast i dont hear them sound not even on cold start. but i havent checked the timing. anyone have a step by step of how to check the timing on a 1g?

You use a timing light. It is fairy easy, just search the board

You need to ground your diagnostic port, clamp the wire onto the #1 plug wire, point the gun at the timing case. Squeeze the trigger and the light will flash when it's supposed to to show you your base timing. You want 5* advance and that is adjusted by the CAS located on the passenger side of the intake cam. You rotate that to adjust your timing.

sweet thanks guys ill get that checked today =). ill let you know it it helps levesque.

The torque for the knock sensor is suppose to be between 14 to 18 ft-lb. If the sensor is a little loose it may not be reading what it's suppose to be. The best think to do would be take it off and check it out if it looks anything like the photo above it probably needs to be replaced. Thanks for the photos tsi1991awd they will help me out when i inspect/replace mine.

so today i tried losening the knock sensor to the point where its almost not touching the block. and i free reved it a couple of times and my knock went away. then i tightened it just a little. and again started getting the knock when free reving and of course while driving. so i lossened it up again and took it for a drive. im currently on 5 pounds of boost on a ebay 50 trim. the car pulled really good and i only saw like 1 or 2 counts of knock and it wasant steady knock it just knocked and went away. so my question is. is it suppose to be loose like that? and is it suppose to knock when i tighten it just a little tiny bit. i dont have lifter tick btw. and also its a brand new knock sensor from autozone. coulnt aford oem atm
