Hi,

My name is Marty and i am from Sydney, Australia.

I've been a long time reader of dsmtuners.com but this is my first post.

Ok, my problem is:

I am building a 2.3L motor for my VR-4. I've got the bottom end all sorted out, now i am worried about the head.

I am building the motor outside of the car. ie, i have two motors, one in the car, one in the workshop. I don't want my car off the road for too long so i am building the motor to drop straight in when its ready. Now due to this, i can't use my head.

I have been told by my mechanic that the Hyundai 2L DOHC head (unsure of which car it's from sorry) flows as well if not better than the 1G head. Is there any truth behind this? The reason i ask is, i am not too keen on forking out big bucks for a standard 1G head if there is another option. Obviously i will be filling it with all the good bits (valve springs, cams etc etc) but just want to know if what i have been told is true.

Sorry about the super long first post and i hope i've posted this in the right section.

Hope to hear from someone in the know soon.

Cheers,

Marty.

i want to say that the mid 90's sonatas had the 2.0 in it. this is basically a carbon copy of the 4g so i doubt the head is any different. you should be able to pick up a used head for pretty cheap.

this is basically a carbon copy of the 4g? do you mean 2g? or something.... else besides 4g, because i seriously doubt that mitsu would make something 16 years after it was made by hyundai

This again. Find out what the hell head he "thinks" this is.
There's every chance that you have access to some models there which we've never heard of.

O, welcome, etc.

I swapped in a hyundai head on my old n/a motor after the timing belt went....the head is the same on chryslers, dsm's and hyundais 89-93 I believe...then you got your 7bolts after 93...I know the heads are the same but for some reason, the hyundai head seemed to give the car a few extra horsies and better topend performance...

4G63 or 4G37 I guess he means

i meant 4g63 not 4th gen. as far as i know the head would be the same like i said before. and for the above poster who said he got more power out of it, the head might have been in better shape and the valves sealed better etc.

You should know that hyundai bought the rights to the mitsubishi design engine. They built 1.6, 1.8, 2.0, and 2.4's all with the dohc head, which is exactly the same casting as the 1g head. They are exactly the same except they didn't drill the rear coolant holes out. It is really easy to drill them. After that the heads are exactly the same head. hyundai made 6 bolt motors untill 1994. Than they did some redesigning and made their own version of the motor. So if you have a head off of any 90-94 dohc hyundai 4 banger it will work on your 4g63. or 2g as that other guy says. Just some informative info for you all.

Thanks for your help guys. :thumb:

So basically, any head of a 2L 6-bolt will do me fine.

I will update you guys with my progress. :)
