Gears have become hard to shift to I’m gonna start with changing my gear oil before I go take it to a mechanic.

Is this the correct gear oil? 420 M/T

The correct part number is 4874465 (superseded from Mitsubishi A995ZC1X01). An alternative is Pennzoil Synchromesh. I know Autozone carries it. I believe Chrysler did transition the manual fluid to ATF+4, but I would only use it as a last resort.

Damn why is the first one hard to find
There’s only 1 I see and I need 2!

Yeah, I feel your pain. The word is Chrysler decided it would be less confusing for their assembly line workers if only one lubricant existed between the 5 speed manual and automatic transmissions, so they phased out the manual fluid and shifted everything over to the ATF. Like you said, you can find them here and there, but usually only a quart at a time. FYI, the a578 manual transmission takes 2.1 quarts, if I’m not mistaken.

Yeah that’s unfortunate I guess. I might buy the 1 quart and find another down the line just to have extra. I’ll just go with penzoil for now. Thank you for this information.

You can run a lot of different fluids in our trans. I ran Mopar ATFt+4 for a few thousand miles and it seemed fine to me. On the Neon forums they would tell you to use 5w30 high mileage engine oil. The 1st gen Neons 2.0 had an identical trans besides shift arms and final drive ratio.
Synchromesh is the closest alternative to what Misu recommends though.

To get a little off topic, honda shows to run 5w30 engine oil as transmission fluid if honda brand manual fluid can not be found. Most people will use that or syncromesh, though ive found syncromesh to be a little too thin and use a mix of 1 quart 5w30 and 1 quart of syncromesh.
