Ok my 2g tranny has been acting up for the past few months. Whenever I am stopped and disengage the clutch to start moving it use to make a violent bang and kick out of first gear, now it has became less and less violent leading me to believe that the gear is getting destroyed. I found this thread (http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=228875&highlight=rebuild+transmission) that discribed what could be wrong. Is there any things that I can check on the car that could also cause this problem before I buy a new/used transmisson?

I had a 2nd gen FWD and it did the same exact thing, but I crashed it/sold it before I fixed the problem. Sounds like the last post in the thread you mentioned has it right. I could always just hold the shifter in the 1st gear position with light hand pressure and it wouldn't pop out.

It wouldn't pop out but you were doing damage to the fork. Popping out of gear is caused by either a worn fork, or something preventing the fork from moving the synchronizer fully over the gear. If you don't have something that the shifter (underhood or in the car) is hitting against then a rebuild is in your future. Please don't just hold the thing in gear, that's a real good way to snap a fork and cost yourself some more money.

I don't try to hold it in gear after the 2nd time it blew out and almost broke my hand I stopped that LOL.

That's good, else you'd be finding this inside your tranny.

how hard would it be to replace the input shaft in a transmission If I was to do it myself? I am confident in my mechanical abilities and my father is a mechanic so should this be an easy job once it is out or should I look for a professional rebuild?

Do you have access to a press? That will be a deciding factor. After doing several rebuilds myself I would send it to someone who knows what they are doing. I am mechanically inclined and my father is also a GM Master Technician and something stupid always seemed to happen to our rebuilds despite having the factory trans manual to go by.

There is not much to the tranny once you get into it. Have a manual and take your time you well be fine. BUT why do you want to replace your input shaft had me worried.:nono:

Many times popping out of first gear is due to a worn intermediate shaft bearing.

I've persoanlly never saw a problem like this caused by a bearing, and if that bearing is that badly worn all the bearings would probably need replacing.

I have rebuilt more than a few transmissions :thumb:

I have personally seen it many times, and in most cases not all bearings need replacing. If the snap ring for that bearing is sized incorrectly (on the small side) it will cause premature wear of that bearing.

this problem is more common than a worn 1/2 shift fork.
