I've recently upgraded my 2G to a 16G TD05H and an Evo manifold. I installed everything back correctly, but now when I start the car, it will turn off at idle in about 20 seconds. If I drive it, it lags Big Time! After reading threads, it sounds like the Wastegate is staying open. But I have NO idea what that means or how to fix it. Do I need an external wastegate?? do I already have one and need to adjust it? Also, what else needs to be upgraded for this turbo to function properly?? Please advise.
Thanks :)

What do you mean by "lagging"? Is the car making no power, or does it just take a while to make power?

I his car is dying 20 seconds in, then I would think he has an intercooler pipe disconnected. Also, make sure the MAF is plugged in.

in regard to the lagging issue you should get a boost gauge to help diagnose if it is the wastegate. also, you'd be able to hear a slight difference in your exhaust tone if it was stuck open. if you're running a 16g with no supporting mods you are probably knocking and/or hitting fuel cut as the stock fuel system can't keep up with the additional air, making you run extremely lean.

If you have a 16g it is internally gated. Did you buy it new? If you did then it is more than likely not malfunctioning. You need to do a boost leak test first, sounds to me like you have a HUGE boost leak. Get back to us after you do that.

Thank you so much for all the responses and ideas. I'll try everything tomorrow and get back to you guys with the results.

A 16g on a stock 2g will not cause the car to shut off even without proper fuel and tuning. The wastegate is inside the side of the turbo which is connected to the evo header, it is pushed open by a 7ish? inch rod connected to the small can looking- thing on the cold side of the turbo. I doubt it's stuck open, but you can test that by pushing and pulling on it, it's hard but it will open and close by just pulling and pushing on it. I agree with those that think it's either the MAF (black box with the electrical connector at the beginning of your intake) which is disconnected or an intercooler pipe is disconnected or has a massive leak.

The wastegate being stuck open will not cause the car to die out after 20 seconds. I would bet on a massive boost leak. If the Maf wasn't plugged in the idle would be absolutely horrible and probably wouldn't make it 20 secs.

The problem wasnt the wastegate. It was the Jpipe and lower IC Piping, in particular the connection with S-Pipe to the intercooler. I ordered a J-Pipe off ebay as well as the lower IC piping. This was a Crucial mistake. The piping didnt really match up, some were 2 1/2 and some were 2 3/4. The inconsistency of air flow to the turbo was causing my car to shut off.

Solution: DEJON lower IC piping and a specially made Jpipe by Dejon.
Part number: "LIP-2gA" (Lower IC Pipe for Automatic transmission)
Part number: "COP-JL-2.5" (Specially made J-pipe)

Its running great! thanks for asking, but I only drove it around the corner LOL. The radiator is shot, so I'm looking at replacing that and the BOV before I drive it too much

So it was a massive boost leak? correct? I am having a similiar issue right now. My car starts but will turn off won't idle and if i keep my foot on the gas it stays on but will turn off after I drove around the block with no power what so ever. I figure mine was a boost leak too but just checking your thread
