16g wastegate

I have my boost controller set to 20psi. Im running an external dump. I can hear the wastegate opening at 5-10psi. Is this normal?

Depends on what kind of spring you have in your wastegate. Did this happen after you intalled the external wastegate. More info please.

Are you on the stock 16g internal wastegate or aftermarket wastegate ?
Either way, if you hear a low scream/hiss sound then it's normal, the wastegate is starting to open slightly.

If you're boost controller is set to 20psi, that's when the wastegate should be opening.

If it's opening too early, something's wrong that will result in slow spool and difficulty achieving your desired boost level.

Jusmx so you are saying my friend's t25 perfectly working turbo is also having a wastegate failure ?
He is boosting 12 psi and i can start hearing the wastegate starting to scream when i get his car to around 8-10 psi.
I it was normal to hear a wastegate start screaming before it reaches the point to where it really screams at its full ?

I'm not calling it a wastegate failure- it could be the MBC as much as the wastegate. If it were opening before the wastegate actuator's factory-set spring pressure (I believe a T25 has a 10psi actuator) then I'd blame the wastegate.

Something's allowing boost pressure to reach the actuator and begins to open it before the desired max boost level. As long as it's making and holding 12psi, I'd say you're just fine....perhaps that's how the wastegate has to function in order to keep the boost at a steady 12psi. However, in the O.P.'s case, his wastegate is opening 10psi or more too early which is definitely going to cause some lag issues.

Wastegate dumps are good for this reason- you know exactly when your wastegate is opening.

I dont have an external wastegate, just the stock one on the turbo. So its normal for it to open alittle?
