ok...just got news that my wastegate on my 95 eclipse 16g turbo is broken. it doesnt even have a wastegate bypass cylnder(mechanic said). just bought it so i had no clue about it. anyways, i need a new wastegate for it. can anyone link me up or telll me what kind i should get?? any help is appreciated.

jake

not too sure.....that is just what my dad said the mechanic told him. as of now all i know is they put it on the dyno thing and i need a new wastegate. any info on where i could get one, how much it would cost, or specs so i can look one up would be awsome. sry for the lack of info but i am pretty clueless too, just know i need a new wastegate and was looking for a price quote. any help would be great.

Sounds like he was talking about a Wastegate Actuator ...

Yea I was trying to get to the problem to see if I could offer additional help, as far as how to test the actuator.

basically i got the car and when the turbo would kick on, rpm's would fly up and then the car would loose power, then gain it back, then loose it and so on. so i brought it in because of that and it was running rich. i heard that i need a new wastegate because it was broken and wouldnt stay open when needed and would just open and close hints the gains and sudden losses of power. so i was told i need a new wastegate but i have no clue what kind to get. if anyone has any ideas for me please post.

thanks

if that is a actuator the link posted above would be perfect. sorry of hte lack of info the first time. you think it could be the actuator???

Sounds more like fuel cut to me, which is usually the result of leaks in the intake piping.

Here's a simple test to make sure your wastegate works. Put an air pump to the nipple of that wastegate and pressurize it. Don't use any of those high pressure unregulated pumps either since you could damage it. Once the wastegate sees 11 psi or so, it should open up. That's it. It either works or it doesn't.

If you want to check your intake for leaks, go here.

that actuator will work on your car. Do you have your car back or is it still at the shop?

To build boost the actuator would need to keep the flapper closed-not open, so that is what it could be doing. If you have the car and want to test it out try this:

Remove the intake "accordian" tube that goes from the turbo to your air filter.. Below that you will see the "actuator" which is in the picture in the link to the ebay auction I provided you. You see the "nipple" on it? (there will be a vacuum hose on the one on your car, pull the vac hose off, get about 2 feet of vacuum hose from the auto parts store, along with a T fitting that will fit into the vacuum line going to your Blow off valve. Cut the blow off valve line 5" away from the Blow off valve, tee in there and run the vaccum hose you purchased from that T to the nipple on the wastegate.

This will test your wastegate to see if it is actually working. If it is you shouldnt be able to build much more than 10PSI of boost. If your still building more boost then that, the actuator could be bad, or you have a 3" exchaust on the car and are experiencing boost creep.

(additionally if you have access to compressed air-- hook your compressor up to the nipple on the wastegate, set the regulator on the compressor to 10 PSI. watch to see if little arm moves the flapper door, if you need to push the regulator up to 12-15lbs try it.)

EDIT: mondo has a good point, could be a boost leak or fuel cut too. I've never experienced fuel cut. :p

i dont think it is a boost leak or fuel cut, they put it on the dyno that pry would have shown up. anyways, i will try those tests tommrrow and post the results....is it any way it could be the actuator?

actually, i just looked at the paper i got back from firestone, and my dad said bypass cylinder and i guess it was the wastgate bypass solenoid. anyone have any clue with that info and would me taking a pic of my turbo due any good

do this test.

Wastegate bypass solenoid? Is that the same as the boost control solenoid on a 1g? Those are only like $60 for a 1g, I don't know if 2gs have the same thing.

I don't know what exactly the problem is due to lack of detail information but I'm pretty sure the problem isn't your wastegate actuator. A defective actuator can do one of the following three things.

1. Stuck open, causing very little boost to be build at later rpms, the most I have heard was about 5psi by 5k.

2. Stuck closed, causing infinite boost.

3. Opening prematurely, causing lower boost levels.

None of these three conditions will cause what you're describing. Once you get the car back and are able to give us more details, we will be able to help you better.

OK....got the car back. i was trying to do the test but i couldn't find my wastegate nipple....is it inside where i take my intake off of??? also, i turned my boost down and now it works fine at like 5-6psi sometimes but when I'm going up a hill and i give it gas, sometimes it just doesn't do anything but you can hear the turbo whine. i will do the test later when i have some time but if this helps you at all that would be awesome.
