The closest I can get the timing belt to TDC is 5 degrees. I've search on here and if I read it correctly, this is the factory setting??

And yes, I do need a manual and the wife got me one for christmas. I ripped a small corner off the wrapping.

My car is a stock 99 spyder gst, auto. 3" down pipe/dunk exhaust, no cat.

Mechanical timing needs to be set perfect, lining up the cam marks with the dowel pins point up, the crank and oil pump sprocket need lined up with their marks on the front cover, and if you still have balance shafts then that needs to be aligned as well.

Ignition timing after grounding out the diagnostic pin, is to be set at 5* BTDC.

Forgot to mention the balance shaft have just been elminated. The timing marks on the cams are straight across and the dowel pins up. But the crankshaft marks are at the 5 degree mark. I have read the VFAQ and the graveyard video on youtube. I have to be missing something so small.

The cams line up mechanically and so should the crank gear to it's timing mark. If it doesn't then it needs reset.

The pulley is used for setting ignition timing.

If either the cylinder head or the deck of the block have been decked any considerable amount then sometimes it will be next to impossible to get the marks perfect.

I bought the car used so have no ideal if it has been or not but guessing it should be closer to TDC then directly on 5.

Sounds like you still may not be getting it. The timing belt mechanical timing (installation) must be lined up with their timing marks - not with any degree mark on the crank pulley. See figure 4 of Timing Belt VFAQ. For real picture see: http://i47.tinypic.com/juhiso.jpg. Notice how the tang under the bolt lines up with the notch (although I personally think the crank should be rotated clockwise just slightly more to get the tang edge lined up more with the notch middle - like in http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=69308&d=1162938557).

Also read the note on step 33 for a good hint. The timing belt mechanical timing MUST be exact so take your time and follow the vfaq exactly. If it's off too far you will bend valves.

The ignition timing which is set at 5* (on the crank pulley) is the timing advance when engine is idling (observed with a timing light), and has NOTHING to do with the timing belt installation mechanical timing.

Thank for all the help. I finally got it on correct. Everything is back together. These are all the things changed and current state:

3' downpipe to Apexi Dunk, no cat. BSEK. New valve cover seals. NGK spark plug wires. Optima red top battery. Lowering springs and camber kit(front and rear). Replaced convertible top.

Now, the car is all back together and she is smoking. here's the video. I will make a new one showing more.white smoke from 4g63t - YouTube

What temperature was it when you took the video? It almost looks like normal smoke from being cold outside.

    What cams are you running?

Seeing the OP is in AZ, I highly doubt it's from the cold.

Yes... it gets cold in phoenix for about a month or two. It was about 60 degrees out. Frost was on the car. I didnt smell the smoke but will when i get it back from firestone. Needed an aligment from the camber kits and lowering install. There's one on base about 100 years from the my house. I changed the timing belt because I got the car from a towing company and it had little to no power at low RPMs. Its in one of my other posts but then the water pump was leaking out the weep hole so since I was in that area, I replaced the timing belt. Then I could'nt get it timed right so I installed the BSEK to make it easier which helped.

I asked what cam's you were running but you did not answer.

If they are stock cams it sounds like they are still not lined up correctly.

Idle vacuum is not correct. Are you sure you have all the timing marks lined up right? If you've never heard the car run until now it's hard to say what might be wrong.

I never heard the engine running correctly since I had it. I'll double check the timing and get some pictures up of it. Thanks for all the quick responds. I have to take a break. I love DSMs and the body of the 2g but getting mad and thinking about posting it on craigslist for a trade for a sports bike. So taking a break before I do something crazy.

Post pictures of the timing marks on the cam gears while the #1 cylinder is at TDC. That will help us help you.
