I was getting onto an onramp in third gear at 3500-4000rpm and not even half way through I hear a very loud thudding and lost all power to drive but the car was still running and making that awful noise. i turn it off immediately and pop the hood. At first I just noticed the alternator belt laying there, so tried to get that on.called a friend over and he was looking around and saw the lower pulley bent up into the sub-frame. thinking its the crank pulley we check the t-belt and that was fine. So I am really not sure what it is, hoping its just the idler and not the crank. What could it be? thank you

Everything is ok. The harmonic balancer split in half, due to the rubber deteriorating. Nothing else was touched. I had a veteran mitsu tech look at it and fix it for free (well I have to but him lunch), since I work for a Mitsu dealer. He said its very common, and they usually go at around 5 years, and is VERY rare that anything else is effected.
Thanks for your help!
If the alternator belt was laying off of the pullies, I'm sure it was one of them that it rests on.(not idler)

Chances are your harmonic balancer came apart. That's the lower most pulley, it has two parts which are connected as one pulley. After awhile they tend to come apart and can be disastrous. Ususally you know when yours is about to go though, upon start up, occasionally it will whine/squeal for a few minutes. Has this ever happened to you?

wow, if its this....consider yourself lucky nothing bad really happened.

One of those pieces could of lodged itself in the timing....

Ive had this wierd screeching noise when i start it for probly for about 6 months but lasts for a couple seconds. I have been told its the starter or injectors never the pulley. I ment to say the harmonic blancer but didnt type it. what all could that have damaged going out like that
